SUMMARY

Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic I is responsible for rapidly fabricating and installing prototypes of experimental and prototype components for fielded and developmental aircraft. Interacts with a test team consisting of engineers, technicians, and other fabrication specialists engaged in research and development of flight test programs to identify requirements and resolve problems with supplied information or designs. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

• Uses technical data, complex blueprints, and mechanical drawings to fabricate, repair, and modify aircraft sheet metal structures for various aircraft.

• Use and maintain common/special tools.

• Coordinates with engineers and designers to develop, plan, and complete major aircraft repairs and modifications not encompassed in field level technical data.

• Applies advanced mathematics and strong knowledge of computers, software applications, operating systems, engineering principles, practices and concepts to program, set up and operate various CNC machines for metal forming operations of complex flight components.

• Determines the order of individual metal forming operations to be performed to ensure efficient work flow. 

• Attends training as necessary to keep abreast of state of the art technology, machining processes, programming software and tooling developments.

• Uses various measuring instruments for metal forming operations, and works to difficult close tolerances on complex flight components manufactured from a variety of metals and materials. 

  • Demonstrates proficiency in assembly techniques to include all aspects of riveting, painting, installation of various fasteners, and performing repairs of various aircraft components.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Must be able to work overtime and possibly on short notice.

• Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Physical. To include a drug screen.

• Must be able to lift 50 lbs

• Must be able to obtain secret level clearance.

• Computer Aided Design (CAD) software knowledge

• Cadman CAM software knowledge

• Knowledge and skill in the use of machines such as CNC Press Brake, Rollers, Shrinker-Stretcher, Shearing machine, Etc.

• Able to read and interpret blue prints, mechanical sketches and drawings.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to: Stand or walk for long periods of time during a regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds; climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other climbing devices; carry tools and equipment; work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions; be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
