Job Title: Archeologist/GIS Specialist I, El Paso,TX (ID#14907)


Fort Bliss Army Installation is an active training facility located in the extreme western part of the State of Texas at El Paso and the south-central area of the State of New Mexico. The reservation occupies approximately 1.2 million acres covering two states and three counties. The Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division (ED) is responsible for the oversight of the installation's natural and cultural resources ensuring compliance with environmental policy, programs and legislation, managing the Regional Environmental Program in support of the Army's environmental strategy for pollution prevention, compliance, restoration and conservation. We are seeking a qualified individual to support the Archaeological Resources program with cultural resource management and compliance with historic preservation legislation on the Fort Bliss military reservation.  The Fort Bliss Conservation Branch conducts data development for input into the Archaeological Resources Geographic Information System (GIS).  This system requires continuous support as new data is obtained from on-going archaeological projects and previously obtained data require QA/QC updates.

Includes the following:

  • Prepare, analyze, and apply GIS methodology to cultural and environmental management problems including, but not limited to, the predictive modeling of potential site locations, geomorphological modeling of soils, prehistoric land use, etc.
  • Integrate contractor cultural resources GPS and GIS data into the archaeological GIS geodatabases.
  • Applying support methodologies including, but not be limited to, merging/updating cultural resource data sets and data from different remote sensing applications which are at different spatial resolutions, correlation and analysis of locational data, and conducting supervised and unsupervised classification of soils, dunes, land cover, and land use (prehistoric and historic), etc. 
  • Provide GIS analysis support to include potential application of the system as it pertains to archaeological and environmental analyses;  manipulate data to develop and display hard copy data layers, maps, images, databases and statistics analyzes, cultural resource variables, soils, land cover, land use (prehistoric and historic), resource zones, etc. 
  • Provide government furnished GIS information to contractors or State archeological labs as requested.
  • Diagnose and resolve data discrepancies; update, test and review data elements; geo-reference satellite and aircraft sensor imagery;  create new data layers producing specific end products and performing data analyzes within capabilities of the system, work with users of the archaeological data sets to ensure data accuracy and that these are developed to best fit intended application. 
  • Provide ongoing input and analysis of cultural resources baseline data, uses GIS capabilities to assist and support in the planning of military training and maneuvers, while integrating cultural resource protection concerns and requirements into the training plan.
  • Using GPS equipment, conduct quality control verification on archaeological sites whose location is not determined with a degree of accuracy that allows assessment of effects of military training.
  • With project POC, co-review GIS submitted on archeological projects, within government review period, and submit review to government POC.
  • Python scripting to help automate any of the above tasks.



This position will not have supervisory authority.


  • Bachelor's degree in Archeology
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in the GIS industry or a related field, including experience with ESRI ArcGIS and geodatabase knowledge.


  • Extensive knowledge of ESRI tools, including ability to choose appropriate data, tools and settings to perform different types of GIS map creation
  • Geodatabase knowledge on ERSI Geodatabase formats
  • Understanding of concepts behind data management in a relational database
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Technical writing skills
  • Ability to share GIS data, maps and workflows with ArcGIS users and non-ArcGIS users
  • Ability to create geoprocessing models to automate GIS tasks
  • Ability to prepare reports
  • Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize assignments effectively
  • Ability to identify discrepancies among data
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail
  • Ability to work both individually and within a team
  • Ability to think and solve complex problems
  • Ability and proficiency to use Microsoft (MS) Office® software to prepare and modify reports, documents and data tracking.
  • Ability to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) and a Fort Bliss driver-training cards and operate a motor vehicle.


Approximately fifty percent of the position duties are performed in a climate controlled office environment on Fort Bliss and fifty percent field work will be required.
