Support USAMRIID within the pathology division to conduct research utilizing molecular pathology techniques


  • Function as a principal investigator focused on applying state-of-the-art molecular pathology techniques to elucidate novel functional related pathology research of infectious agents
  • Provide Ultra-structural and Nano-scale characterization for infected tissues and cells, biological select agents, and prophylactics/therapeutics under development, to include immunological identification of pertinent proteins and epitopes
  • Prepare approximately specimens for and perform transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to include standard plastic thin section work (ultrastructure), negative staining, and immunolabeling
  • Perform scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused-ion beam-SEM (FIB-SEM) to include surface analysis of agents, cells, and tissue (ultrastructure); surface analysis and particle size distribution of prophylactics and therapeutics (Nano-scale characterization), and immunolabeling
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot SEM, FIB-SEM, and TEM scopes and preparatory equipment, as well as provide oversight of calibration, microscope alignment, equipment replacement and modernization.
  • Work with pathologists, technicians, and researchers on experimental planning, data analysis, modifying protocols to address scientific or technical obstacles, and troubleshooting problems that may arise in the course of research
  • Prepare written reports for researchers and pathologists as required for research protocols within established timelines and in accordance with existing Pathology Division and USAMRIID policies and procedures
  • Manage laboratory to include ordering and proper storage of supplies, ensuring proper functioning of equipment, and utilizing fiscal resources appropriately
  • Provide daily oversight of military and civilian technicians working in the Ultra-structural Department within the Pathology Division to ensure work is being performed properly, timely, and efficiently
  • Ensure proper organization and storage of specimens and records used in research in accordance with existing Pathology Division and USAMRIID policies and procedures
  • Ensure laboratory meets the requirements of any inspections conducted within the research facility
  • Maintain accurate records and data entry of all analyzed specimens and provide periodic workload reports
  • Train other members of the research team in research techniques
  • Oversee other members of the research team in protocols, designing experiments, troubleshooting technical issues, interpreting data, and writing manuscripts
  • Supervise in the drafting and writing of manuscripts, research proposals and technical reports.
  • Present research findings in scientific forums such as conferences, oral speaking engagements, and in meeting with collaborators; publish experimental data when appropriate
  • Provide Technical POC with regular (i.e. weekly) research progress updates or upon request using Microsoft Office based applications
  • Complete required job-related training as necessary in accordance with Pathology Division policies and procedures
  • Recommend attending 1-2 scientific conferences annually in order to obtain continuing education and to ensure cutting edge knowledge and techniques are maintained


No supervisory/management authority or describe supervision


  • PhD in Biological Sciences
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an academic and or industry setting in a relevant biological discipline
  • In Depth knowledge of electron microscopy
  • Preferred experience in evaluating pathological microbes/select agents
  • Experience performing electron microscopy to include:
    • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
    • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Preferred experience performing Focused-ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM)

This position is primarily performed in laboratory space
