SUMMARY

Be a part of exciting research in military health by joining the Joint Pathology Center (JPC) Pulmonary and Environmental Pathology Department in support of the Pulmonary Research Project. The mission of the JPC is to deliver cost-effective, high quality, multidisciplinary pathology consultation and education in addition to preserving, modernizing, and growing the nation’s oldest tissue repository to promote biomedical research ultimately becoming the pathology center of excellence by advancing the health of our nation’s military and other federal customers.

The relationship between exposures associated with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and the subsequent development of pulmonary diseases in the U.S. military personnel is of concern to many individuals and organizations. The JPC and its previous organization the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), have reviewed a large number of pulmonary pathology specimens from previously-deployed US service members throughout the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). These specimens have been submitted for expert review from pathologists at military medical treatment facilities (MTF’s) across the US and overseas, and from Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC’s). The availability of archived pathology specimens and associated data permit focused histopathological review of pulmonary pathology specimens and additional tissue-based studies at the JPC. JPC personnel have the expertise in Pulmonary & Mediastinal Pathology, Thoracic Radiology and Environmental Pathology to conduct such studies. This project will consist of three parts: JPC/AFIP records review, histopathology review of lung biopsy specimens and a particle analysis study of “foreign” exogenous material retained in lung specimens.

Our client is in need of Chemical Technician to assist in the third stage of the Pulmonary Research Project – particle analysis study of “foreign” exogenous material retained in lung specimens. This technician will run the scanning electron microscopes at the client site Silver Spring, MD. This position will be part of a team of military and civilian research scientists.
