SUMMARY

 

The National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) supports the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Water Mission Area by performing quality assurance on laboratory and field measurements and supplying reference materials to USGS water-quality programs and projects. Quality Assurance (QA) data from various projects are used to estimate bias and variability within the field, analytical and measurement processes. Statistical, graphical, and data reports summarizing the QA data are produced and distributed to internal and external USGS customers.

 

The position is for a Chemist.  A successful candidate will be providing support in the laboratory area.   Knowledge to be able to analyze and test substances to determine their composition, quality, purity and other characteristics. Basic computer skills including use of Windows, Microsoft Word and Excel are preferred.  The successful candidate will work with NWQL project managers to evaluate current and historical information administrating the benthic macroinvertebrate that would improve the overall operations’ efficiency and effectiveness.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES;

 

Analyze and test substances to determine their composition, quality, purity and other characteristics.

  • Must be able to analyze and test substances to determine their composition, quality, purity and other characteristics.
  • Operate analytical instrumentation with very little oversight to test substances to determine their composition, quality, purity and other characteristics.
  • Perform laboratory procedures as assigned per NWQL Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines.
  • Prepare samples in accordance with method SOPs for instrumental analysis.
  • Provide monthly Quality Control charts as assigned.
  • Identify and take appropriate action for Quality Control related problems.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting/maintenance of assigned instrumentation.
  • Performs special projects as required
  • Document project activities in writing.
  • Provide written reports as required.  Provide appropriate documentation in lab notebooks within stated requirements.  All data documentations follow appropriate SOP guidelines and established policy.
  • Strictly adheres to all safety, health, and environment processes and procedures.
  • Makes immediate notification to responsible government personnel if a problem arises.

 

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will have no have supervisory authority.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Chemistry or related fields
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a chemical laboratory setting or similar work environment. Preferred Federal government setting
  • Must be a US Citizen.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to stand for long periods.
  • Must have the availability to work late evening and weekend if required
  • Knowledge and skill to independently solve minor equipment and sample problems.
  • Must have the ability to works as a team member or independently as procedure requires.
  • Proficient with regards to organizing, recording and summarizing data
  • Excellent communication skill such as oral and written.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

This position is on the Federal secured campus. Office and laboratory environment which requires long periods of Standing, working at a desk, and computer terminals.   The position is 7:30 am to 4:30pm. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

 

The USGS – NWQL often work from water sample on Quality Assurance (QA) data from various projects are used to estimate bias and variability within the field, analytical and measurement processes. Statistical, graphical, and data reports summarizing the QA data are produced and distributed to internal and external USGS customers.  The NWQL’s Administrative Services Section supports the NWQL in various administrative areas, e.g., human resources, financial, and acquisition
