SUMMARY

Sets up and operates a full range of conventional machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, brigeports boring mills, in addition to setting up, programming, and operating basic CNC equipment to perform work involving moderate to route set-ups and close to critical tolerances on various material types.  Performs complex and diversified machining operations.  Inspects work and performs quality checks to ensure conformance to engineering drawings.  Cross checks fellow machinists and advises of any quality issues.  May contribute and advise engineering regarding design.  Works as part of a team – must be willing to support the team and collaborate to support quality and production goals.  May train other machinists as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment
  • Operates multiple types of machines in order to meet production demands
  • Sets and adjusts machine settings as necessary
  • Reads and interprets diagrams and blueprints to select, position, and secure machinery to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product
  • Adjusts time settings to complete tasks accurately according to customer specifications
  • May set-up, program, and operate basic CNC equipment.  Work involves moderate to complex set-ups and close to critical tolerances on various material types
  • Develops and fabricates fixtures as needed
  • Performs complex diversified machining operations necessary to produce the Company’s manufacturing products as well as experimental/prototype precision parts for field testing/test lab
  • Machine work is performed from standard documentation, rough sketches, and preliminary drawings.  Cross checks fellow machinists and advises of quality issues
  • Maintains safe and clear work area on a day-to-day basis
  • Keeps informed of and follows machine shop safety policies and procedures

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience is required.  Must demonstrate a complete understanding of machinery and tool usage.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

An employee who is an A Class machinist is one who demonstrates the skill, knowledge and experience required to manufacture complex parts with little or no supervision. He or she must be able to make complex tooling, inspect complex parts and be able to read and edit complex programs. One must be able to read and understand complex blueprints and possess excellent math skills. An A Class machinist will have good attendance, a good attitude and the ability to work well with others. An A Class machinist must also make wise use or their time and show an above average commitment to their employer.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Moderate sound (e.g., business office with office machines and computers, people traffic), some outdoor weather conditions and all routine job tasks inherent in position; the ability to stand and up to the entire amount of the assigned shift; the ability to talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; close vision; lift and move up to 50 pounds; color vision; depth perception and ability to correct and adjust focus.

Hours are Mon – Thurs 8 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.
