The Programmer would be a member of a team that follows a pseudo-Agile development cycle. The team promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development, early delivery, continuous improvement and flexible response to change in requirements.


CNT is looking for a Computer Programmer to support their team in Lafayette. The successful candidate will support the team in the following tasks:

Basic Programming Support

This position will be part of a large, mature software development group with a focus on supporting ecosystems research and outreach efforts. Project work can easily extend to seismic and or surface water projects to support the wide variety of research performed by the Federal government with national and international impacts.

The primary duties of this position will be to develop web applications utilizing C#.NET developed in Visual Studio to be run on IIS web servers either on premises or in the AWS cloud with various database backend data stores. All work will be directed by senior staff and will be performed in compliance with a software specification that may include use case workflows, user interface design templates along with the information on backend APIs. As with any science support software development effort, large datasets are key and therefore the Programmer will need familiarity using code to access databases where tabular and spatial data is housed (MS SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL). Familiarity with the following is considered a plus, but will not prevent the Programmer from consideration:

  • Code repositories (i.e. GIT or SVN)
  • Continuous integration tools (i.e. Team Foundation Server or AWS CodePipeline)
  • Geo-spatial data (i.e. feature classes, shapefiles, gridded rasters)


As an entry level position, the successful candidate will be expected to occasionally support senior staff on database design and implementation efforts. Additionally, the Programmer will be required to provide documentation which is key to the transfer of knowledge within the group and to the next generation of programmers. This includes in-code documentation of their work product along with supporting senior staff on umbrella documentation for the project at large. Documentation efforts will also include regular interactions with a JIRA ticketing system to track issues and maintain the historical record of the project.

Testing is a key component to all successful software efforts. This position will have key role testing both their developed code and testing software from colleagues in the group. Testing efforts will require assistance developing test plans, participating in the establishment of automated testing pipelines and performing unit testing, functional testing, performance testing and usability testing.

Lastly, effective verbal and written communication is critical. Since the Programmer will be in a team that supports science efforts across the country, effectively communicating with product owners and users will have significant impacts on project success.


By the 10th of each month, a monthly report describing the progress and status of work shall be provided following a certain format that will be provided.

CNT Site Lead and Client representative shall be notified immediately of any issues that requires their input.

Bachelors degree in computer science and/or relevant practical experience and training.


The successful candidate must be proficient with:

  • C#.NET, JAVA or Python as a software development language.
  • T/SQL or PL/SQL as an enterprise database communication language and the basic concepts of enterprise database structures to store and retrieve data.
  • English as an oral and written communication language.
  • The concepts behind version control technology such as Git or SVN including branching and pull requests.

Although not required, it would be beneficial to have a general understanding of:

  • Visual Studio, Eclipse, or Netbeans as a primary Integrated Development Environment
  • GIS environments and geospatial data
  • Building and maintaining geospatially driven web applications
  • The concepts of continuous integration / continuous delivery as part of a code deploy pipeline.



Office environment, travel for field activities and/or meetings may be needed.
