SUMMARY

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

  • Perform laboratory surveillance analysis of seasonal influenza viruses form serological data generated from serological assays and animal model research.  Provide results of analyses of these data for decisions by CDC in selecting influenza strains for seasonal influenza vaccine production.
  • Serves as data manager for influenza serology team, maintains serology SAS databases, maintains and updates SAS programs for study reports and analyses. 
  • Serves as a technical expert by providing consultation on the management and analysis of biologic and epidemiologic data from large, complex serology studies of influenza viruses.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and implements analytical programs, especially SAS programs, to manage and interpret data.
  • Works with team members to accomplish research objectives of serologic studies.  Provides data analyses on three levels:  (1) at the assay level for the complex serological assays performed in Flu Serology, (2) at the study level to accomplish research objectives, and (3) at the overview level to evaluate assay performance over a period of time.
  • Provides the data analysis in the twice yearly seasonal influenza vaccine strain selection studies for WHO vaccine strain selection meetings.
  • To serve as liaison with CDC/NCIRD/ID Laboratory Management Systems (LIMS) team to provide the best interface for serology and implementation of relational databases
  • Perform laboratory data analysis using a variety of specialized programs (e.g. GraphPad Prizm, JASPR, etc.)
  • Perform statistical analysis of data obtained using experimental animal models
  • Conducts analysis of research data and prepares technical reports, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation.
  • Performs other job related duties as required.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

  • This position does not have supervisory or management authority.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree with at least one (1) years of laboratory experience in biology or microbiology and four (4) years of data management experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of public health research and evaluation to analyze, evaluate and provide expert advice and consultation.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, applications, and state-of-the-art technology in the position's scientific area of responsibility to provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues.
  • Ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpretation of results to coordinate the evaluation of programs and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program or project areas, provide guidance and advise program administrators and members of the community, respond to inquiries, and interact with high level officials and representatives from public and private public health organizations

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work will be performed in climate controlled office environment.

  • The environment may require prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, and light lifting up to 20 lbs
