CNSP is looking for CNSP is looking for a Drafter/CAD Operator-Journeyman to support the Department of Energy (DOE) Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) Headquarters in Lakewood, CO and support our team providing technical services to the Office of Design and Engineering under this Technical Support Services contract.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Redraw original manual drawings using AutoCAD software and WAPA's block library to correctly depict substation layout.
  • Research and use applicable drawings to create multi-layered substation plan model: Foundation plans, foundation outline and reinforcement details, general equipment layout plans, cable trenches and conduit and buried cable.
  • Note any inconsistencies between civil and outdoor electrical drawings.
  • Create all plan drawings and details as well as culverts & headwalls for drainage control by manipulating layers to correctly display items per drawing type.
  • Work is completed in preparation of stage additions, substation upgrades, etc. and without input from engineering group.
  • Create sections, structural design and details for substation layout
  • Act as a liaison between engineering disciplines throughout the design process
  • Create all plan drawings, details and elevations by manipulating layers to correctly display items per drawing type.
  • Create Location and Vicinity maps
  • Utilize WAPA's Geographic Information
  • Create drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Have technical competence in using latest version AutoCAD drafting software
  • Import survey data
  • Create and design grading, erosion control and drainage, including ditch and pond design and drafting from Engineer's input
  • Created site plans including site access roadway design and proposed underground utilities per engineer's specifications.
  • Calculate cut and fill data
  • Create drawings at proper scale
  • Develop site planning for high voltage electrical facilities
  • Creating transmission line Plan and Profile drawings using PLS-CADD
  • Import survey data Utilize Digital imagery
  • Utilize WAPA's Geographic Information System
  • Create drawings at proper scale
  • Generate plan and profile drawings


Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position may have some supervisory or management authority when designated.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Candidates must be US Citizens.
  • Candidates will undergo a US government federal background investigation and must be able to favorable pass a drug test.
  • A High School degree or GED equivalent is required in addition to an Associate degree in one of the engineering disciplines, or formal college level drafting course and equivalent work experience in a related engineering fields.
  • BA/BS or MA/MS is highly desired and preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of seven (7) years of drafting experience.  Three (3) of those years must be recent and full-time on AutoCad. 
  • Must be expert in either AutoCAD 2012, 2D & 3D, Civil 3D or PLS-CADD.
  • Must be familiar with Raster Editor software.
  • Must be proficient with conversion of manufacturer drawings to standard AutoCAD format and drafting standards.
  • Must be proficient with multi discipline drafting including grading, civil, structural, outdoor electrical, mechanical, architectural, high voltage transmission line sections and details, wiring diagrams, schematics.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to work from sketches and verbal instructions from engineer.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Utilizing and applying computer software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of design and drafting practices and fabrication and field construction techniques is required.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Assurance principles is required.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state codes/guidelines is required.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner in diversified situations.

This position is primarily performed in a secured federal office setting, a controlled office environment as well as working outside in a job site diverse and changing weather environment.
