Economic Assistant – Baghdad, Iraq (ID# 14189)


The Economic Assistant contributes to in-depth economic reporting and support for U.S. business by developing and maintaining contacts with key contacts in the government and the private sector in support of U.S. Embassy Baghdad Economic section.


Maintains up-to-date information on local economy to include data collection, maintenance and interfaces with appropriate local officials concerning statistical reporting. Assist the Economic Officer and stays abreast of press reporting on economic and commercial topics. Assist in updates to the Country Commercial Guide. Develop and maintains contacts with economic and commercial figures in the Regional Government (up to the Director General (DG) level) and the local private sector (up to CEO) in order to stay fully appraised of the economic and commercial environment in the Region. Assist the Economic Officer in preparing background briefings on a wide range of economic and commercial topics.

Research Economic/Commercial topics as directed by the Economic Officer and presents results in writing at a level which is suitable for inclusion in USG reporting with minimal editing. Monitor Arabic language media on behalf of the Economic Officer as tasked. Suggests and makes appointments for the Economic Officer and visitors with economic/commercial figures. Accompanies visitors and provides interpretation. Provide limited translation services. Other duties as assigned.


This position will not have supervisory authority.


a) Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics or related field is required.

b) Highly desirable –Advanced degree/Graduate focused on Iraq or regional studies.


a) At least five (5) years’ experience as an economic analyst or economic development project assistant in the public or private sector.

b) Must possess thorough understanding of economic principles as well as the structure of the local economy.

c) Ability to interact appropriately with high ranking government officials, USG VIP visitors.

d) Ability to rapidly assimilate new information.

e) Ability to conduct independent research.

f) Ability to adapt to changing schedules and last minute demands with flexibility.


Level 4 in English is required

Level 4 in Arabic is required


If filled by a Local National (LN), the position shall require vetting by the host country Regional Security Officer (RSO) in accordance with local standards, prior to contract performance.
