Cherokee Nation Technologies (CNT) supports the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) across the United States. CNT is currently looking for a General Biologist Level IV to assist the USGS, at their Lafayette, LA, site.


The General Biologist IV level will provide scientific research and technical support for the research and supporting the USGS’s mission as they work for CNT.



  • Collect biological and environmental data in the field, greenhouse, seed bank nursery and laboratory (e.g., prepare and measure samples) to include 65 sites, and 5 plots per site with an overall total of 325 samples
  • Establish, and maintain seed bank experiments in the seed bank nursery and trouble-shoot environmental problems in the experiment.
  • Establish and maintain field experiments (approximately five), including litter production, root ingrowth studies, above ground standing crop, and soil carbon content in the geographical study of the southeastern swamps of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Gulf and Atlantic Coasts.
  • Establish and maintain growth chamber experiments (two per year) and trouble-shoot environmental problems by testing differences in growth of plants in the growth chambers vs. in greenhouse or natural conditions.
  • Input all data and metadata into usable data files (3-5 datasets per year) and do preliminary data analysis using JMP SAS and provide technical assistance to senior scientists in the analyses of this data yo include: data reformatting, quality control checking, graphical output development, creation of archival data files and web site information. 
  • Create photo images (65 images) and information for project websites with suggestions from the TOM and other team members.
  • Operate and provide routine maintenance on equipment to include data-loggers, field meters, specialized sampling equipment, and surveying equipment.
  • May be required to coordinate with and provide technical guidance to other non-federal research staff (interns, volunteers, other contractors) on established project protocols and techniques.
  • Attend meetings and conferences related to cooperator support as needed. 
  • Document the status and time keeping of all projects and products in project tracking database as per established procedure.



  • A master’s and a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field is required
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in earth science, wetland research, delineation, and ecological fieldwork
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the study of ecology, botany, wildlife, and/or fisheries biology is required
  • Successfully attend and pass Defensive Driving safety training
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, and possess a valid, current driver’s license. 
  • Provide proof of current required insurance prior to the operation of any government vehicles
  • Have successfully completed a CNT/client approved boating safety class and first aid/CPR courses
  • Have the ability to swim in deep water and obey all safety rules and boating regulations.
  • Plant taxonomy training and experience in estimating root volumes.
  • Have the ability to operate motorboats in a variety of riverine, estuarine, and marine environments, including trailering, launching, and recovery of small craft. Vessels utilized may include watercraft such as canoes, 26’ twin outboard v-hulls or airboats
  • Ability to work in outside elements and travel  
  • The ability to pass a drug screen and federal background check
