Health Communication/Marketing Specialist

CDC's mission is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. The Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS) in the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at CDC, was formed in 2013. The mission of DLS is to strengthen the nation’s clinical and public health laboratory systems by continuously improving quality and safety, data and information science, and workforce competency. DLS provides leadership and support to enhance clinical and public health laboratory workforce through initiatives that strengthen recruitment, retention, management, communications, and training.



  • Provide health communication, education, writing/editing support for DLS.
    • Develop, implement, and manage communication and marketing programs, projects, and initiatives for various audiences, including communication plans, collateral materials.
    • Work with subject matter experts to plan, develop, implement and evaluate communication and educational materials intended to reach internal/external partners, healthcare providers, and the clinical and public health laboratory audiences
    • Guide the development, testing, and disseminating communication information and audience-based products, tools, and messages (i.e., via written, electronic, and audiovisual formats). This includes, but not limited to:
      • DLS internet, intranet, and SharePoint sites
      • CDC social media channels
      • Other communication channels such as GovDelivery, CDC-INFO, etc.
  • Coordinate with DLS and CDC SMEs on health media production (e.g., graphics, broadcast production); risk communication activities; marketing campaigns and activities; publications; electronic health communication and marketing activities (e.g., web, podcasts); and partnerships and strategic alliances. Provide technical assistance with DLS marketing and promotion.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate communication plans. Provide consultation and technical assistance to internal and external groups concerning health communication and marketing programs, projects, and strategies. This includes, but not limited to DLS
    • Communication materials such as fact sheets, flyers, brochures, stories/vignettes
    • External and internal communication such as newsletters, videos/audio recordings.
    • Exhibiting materials and support including exhibiting, ordering materials.
    • Media materials and support, including developing talking points, prepping SMEs
  • Provide support for internal and external DLS partnership activities including coordination of meetings, development of materials, etc.
    • Facilitate ongoing internal and external partnership involvement to plan, implement, and evaluate communication and marketing campaigns and activities.
    • Support the development and implementation of a DLS Communications and Partnership Plan.
    • Collaborate with other key partners throughout the agency to ensure that the divisions resources area incorporated, utilized, and promoted by other groups.
    • Write talking points, policy documents, and other collateral materials to highlight DLS’ work
  • Develop a media and policy outreach strategy to highlight the work of DLS each year.
  • Work with DLS subject matter experts to compile metrics from training resources and outreach efforts; identify opportunities to improve outreach efforts


  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree is preferred in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Advertising, English, or related field
  • 5 to 10 years' experience developing communication and marketing strategies
  • Creative
  • Innovative
  • Strong Social Media Skills
  • Understands and have experience in design (i.e., physical or media based)
