Laboratory Technician 4 (Research Technical Support Virology) Fort Detrick, MD (ID# 14070)

Since 1969, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) has served as the Department of Defense's (DoD) lead laboratory for medical biological defense research. While its core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, USAMRIID also investigate disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medical solutions—therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and information—that benefit both military personnel and civilians. USAMRIID is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.
Seeking Laboratory Technician to provide laboratory support with laboratory experiments in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories and thus must hold and maintain BPRP status, IAW the provisions in this contract and applicable regulations. The technician shall aid in the execution of scientific studies, basic cell culture, and plaque assays, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other assays, animal procedures, collection/data analyzing, and maintain laboratory and laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

  • Serve as BSL 3 mentor
  • Prepare and participate in BSL2, BSL3 labs for Safety, Bio-surety, CDC, and Department of ArmyInspector General inspections at a minimum 4 times a year.
  • Will support 20-25 Non-human Primate studies, 40-50 rodent studies per year. Will perform inoculationswith virus, collecting tissue for processing and conduct bleedings. Will perform Complete Blood Count(CBC), general chemistries, coagulations assays and other clinical laboratory based assays on samples fromanimals.
  • Will perform basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR andother assays to support 25-30 Non Human Primate studies, 40-50 rodent studies. Workload isapproximately 1000 plates/assays per month.
  • Will perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutic compounds against a variety of viruses.May use 200-300 plates/assays per month.
  • Will perform immunological procedures including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
  • (ELISA) and Western Blot assays. May perform 200 assays/month.
  • Will be proficient at completing flow cytometric analysis of cellular populations unsupervised on multipledifferent flow cytometry machines in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. Will perform approximately 100tubes/samples per month.
  • Will be responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. Will assess supplies and ensure supplies are ordered or will order supplies using GFEBSordering system. May need to order supplies using GFEBS systems. Anticipated workload is 25-30orders/monthly.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of B.S. in a science discipline•3+ years’ experience in Virology Research & or Animal Research
  • Excellent written and verbal communications
  • Require work at the BSL -2,3 and 4 level, therefore, must obtain and maintain enrollment in the BPRP program.
