Laboratory Quality Assurance – Denver, CO (ID# 13206)

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gathers data for determining the location, amount, availability, and quality of ground and surface water throughout the United States and its territories. About 75 to 80 percent of the water-quality samples used in this effort is analyzed by the National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL). The NWQL determines organic and inorganic constituents in samples of ground and surface water, river and lake sediment, aquatic plant and animal material, and in precipitation samples. The NWQL receives about 30,000 samples every year for chemical analysis.

SUMMARY

 

The National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) supports the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Water Mission Area by performing quality assurance on laboratory and field measurements and supplying reference materials to USGS water-quality programs and projects. Quality Assurance (QA) data from various projects used to estimate bias and variability within the field, analytical and measurement processes. Statistical, graphical, and data reports summarizing the QA data produced and distributed to internal and external USGS customers.

 

The position is for a Laboratory Quality Assurance Support. The Position will serve as a technica1 specialist and customer contact for the full range of analytical services provided by the National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) including analyses done in-house and through commercial laboratories under contract with the NWQL. The QA position work closely with the NWQL project managers to evaluate current and historical information administrating quality assurance associated applications that would improve the overall operations’ efficiency and effectiveness.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES;

 

  • Ensures that performance evaluation or NFSS samples, for each analytical line for which samples received, and submitted on time.
  • Ensures that proposal-specific samples are received and data are in the LIMS
  • Queries LIMS to obtain and/or verify information
  • Creates, enters, completes and updates a variety of database related documents and spreadsheets
  • Verifies information that exists in the LIMS is correct and complete.
  • Identifies missing or incorrect information and ensures corrections are made;
  • Coordinate PT and NFSS sample analysis
  • Address routine and non-routine problems related to samples, data release and interpretation;
  • Tracks comments received from customers and identifies those that need to be brought to the attention of management;
  • Makes immediate notification to responsible government personnel if problems arise.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent Customer Service with timely responses to calls, emails or task as assigned.
  • Bachelor degree in Quality Assurance or related field
  • 2-4 years’ experience in  using LIMS software
  • Preferred experience in working within the Federal government setting
  • Must be a US Citizen.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge or skills in using LIMS software  for queries to obtain and/or verify information
  • Uses initiative and considerable judgment to solve problems technical problems
  • Strictly adheres to all safety, health and environment processes and procedures
  • Excellent communication skill such as oral and written.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is on the Federal secured campus. Office and laboratory environment, which requires long periods of sitting, working at a desk, and computer terminals.   The position is 7:30 am to 4:30pm.
