Laboratory Technician 3 (Research Technical Support III)

Since 1969, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) has served as the Department of Defense's (DoD) lead laboratory for medical biological defense research. While its core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, USAMRIID also investigate disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medical solutions—therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and information—that benefit both military personnel and civilians. USAMRIID is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.

Seeking a Laboratory Technician to provide support research efforts for the Virology Department.



  • Serve as BSL 2 mentor
  • Will support 30-35 Non-human Primate studies, 60-70 rodent studies per year. Will perform inoculations with virus, collecting tissue for processing and conduct bleedings. Will perform Complete Blood Count (CBC), general chemistries, coagulation assays and other clinical laboratory based assays on samples from animals.
  • Will perform basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR and other assays to support 25-30 Non Human Primate studies, 60-70 rodent studies. Workload is approximately 1000 plates/assays per month.
  • Will perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutic compounds against a variety of viruses. May use 200-300 plates/assays per month.
  • Will perform immunological procedures including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western Blot assays.  May perform 200 assays/month.
  • Will be proficient at completing flow cytometric analysis of cellular populations unsupervised on multiple different flow cytometry machines in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories.  Will perform approximately 100 tubes/samples per month.
  • Will be responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories.  Will assess supplies and ensure supplies are ordered or will order supplies using GFEBS ordering system.  May need to order supplies using GFEBS systems. Anticipated workload is 25-30 orders/monthly.


  • B.S. in a science discipline
  • 3+ years’ experience in the Virology/Lab Technical Research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Require work at the BSL-2, 3 and 4 level, therefore, must maintain enrollment in the BPRP program.
