Laboratory Technician IV (Entomology)

Since 1969, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) has served as the Department of Defense's (DoD) lead laboratory for medical biological defense research. While its core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, USAMRIID also investigates disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medical solutions therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and information that benefit both military personnel and civilians. USAMRIID is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.
We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Technician to provide entomology laboratory support.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides biological science laboratory support and work with arthropods and rodents at Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) or Biological Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) and thus must hold and maintain BPRP status, IAW the provisions in this contract and applicable regulations.
  • Work with live mosquitoes, sand flies and other arthropods.
  • Feed mosquitoes and other arthropods on virus-infected animals to determine the susceptibility of the arthropods to various viruses. Studies could occur 10-12 times per year.
  • Provide both real-time conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and be able to develop and modify assays. Approx. 25-50 plates per week.
  • Perform laboratory procedures to include virus growth, virus isolation, virus Quantitation, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) in a BSL-2/3 laboratory. Approx. 50-100 plates.
  • Perform routine analyses including gel Electrophoresis, DNA isolation, bacterial transformation and amplification.  Approx. 25-50 plates.
  • Keep detailed records and track inventory of viruses and cell line. Track equipment maintenance records and coordinate any maintenance.  Maintain Laboratory supplies.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an BS degree in a scientific discipline
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Must be eligible for enrollment in the Army Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP)
  • Must be a US citizen
