Library Technician

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) works to modernize public health tracking systems; provide timely information to clinicians and public health partners; train a competent and sustainable public health workforce; strengthen the nation’s clinical laboratory systems; and Innovate to increase effectiveness and efficiency of CDC programs.

CDC CSELS is in need of personnel to provide library support services such as document delivery, technical, public services support, knowledge management, and library systems support services.

Responsibilities:

  • Create appropriate authority records, subject headings and metadata to effectively create discovery and access to public health and occupational safety and health collections.
  • Update library staff of new rules for new type of materials.
  • Identify and resolve integrated library system and database maintenance problems.
  • Perform original and copy cataloging, using current and emerging national and international cataloging/archival/metadata standards and practice.
  • Assign MARC and non-MARC metadata effectively to expand access and discovery to public health and occupational safety and health materials for the ILS and institutional repository.
  • Assist with retrospective conversion and reclassification of collections in subject areas.
  • Formulate classification numbers and resolve problems as needed.
  • Research and apply new techniques and technologies for cataloging e-resources
  • Participate in and recommend solutions and best practices for retrospective conversion projects.
  • Coordinate with library staff to ensure bibliographic access, collection arrangement, and cataloging priorities meet reference and collection management needs.
  • Serve as Cataloging and Metadata Librarian and subject specialist for public health and occupational safety and health materials.
  • Assist in collection development, identifying new books, donations, and resources within scope for possible addition to the collection.
  • Communicate and collaborate with staff
  • Provide research and reference assistance at the reference desk.
  • Assist with compiling and editing collection development guidelines.
  • Identify gaps in current library content / collections and present recommendations to CDC library staff in support of future acquisitions.
  • Provide services and support to CDC library staff for collaboration on projects related to specific subject, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the serials librarian and other catalogers to make sure all electronic resources are reflected in the online catalog.

Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of library techniques, systems, and procedures
  • Some knowledge of sources of reference and bibliographical materials. 
  • Ability to use and explain the library facilities, including catalogs and other reference aids. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with library staff and patrons.
  • Ability to present ideas effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel of the institution.
  • Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to the assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
  • Associate’s Degree from a recognized college or technical institute with 16 credits in library science or computer science; OR two or more years of experience functioning as a library paraprofessional in a similar role successfully performing the duties and tasks described above.
