Our client, the National Institute of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the nation’s medical research agency – making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.

We are looking for an entry level Material Handler to be responsible for receiving incoming package deliveries and delivering the package under the general administrative direction from the Dock Manager.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive packages at loading docks.
  • Check manifest for receipt of materials, supplies and equipment received at the dock to ensure that items are being delivered to the correct building.
  • Inspect packages visually for damages.
  • Notify the recipient about damaged packages and asks them to come to the dock to inspect the damages prior to receipt or rejection of package from the vendor.
  • Document any damages on paperwork included with the delivery.
  • Sign for delivery of packages.
  • Sort packages by floors and/or building sections under the general supervision of the Dock Manager.
  • Scan packages in the automated log and deliver package(s) to the Addressee.
  • Ensure that Addressee or closest person within receiving area signs for receipt of packages using the Dock Management System (DMS).
  • Ensure that packages identified as temperature sensitive and/or perishable are handled carefully and promptly.
  • Notify relevant receiving personnel of any package special handling requirements.
  • Closes and secures the dock at the end of each working day.
  • Ensure that the dock is clean and Kiosk is secured at the end of each working day.
  • Accept no responsibility for the delivery of live animals. (Deliveries of live animals are not handled by the Material Handler.)

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position does not require supervisory or management authority

Education and/or Experience:

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 to 2 years of continuous work experience preferably in a warehouse or clerical setting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills; both oral and written
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and make sound decisions
  • Customer service oriented
  • Dependable, reliable and accountable
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. consistently physically be on your feet for a better portion of the day
  • Ability to successfully  pass a federal background check and drug screen

Work Environment:

  • This position is in a federal office setting in a storage room and shipping receiving setting
