SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Microbiologist II to support the CDC Picornavirus Laboratory.

The Picornavirus Laboratory Microbiologist III will provide timely clinical specimen management, specimen testing, and test result reporting in a high complexity Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA) molecular diagnostics laboratory. The position is necessary to support ongoing CDC investigations to identify and characterize viral pathogens associated with cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). The Respiratory Viruses Diagnostic Laboratory of the Respiratory Virus Branch will establish and support laboratory testing methods and systems to perform diagnostic testing and virus characterization for Rhinovirus and other respiratory viruses from human cases of AFM to investigate their potential association and possible cause of AFM.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

 

  • Perform molecular virology studies (detection and typing and high-level characterization) on viral diseases including rhinovirus and other respiratory viruses;
  • Evaluate diagnostic platforms for the detection of viruses;
  • Participate in burden of disease studies to investigate the potential association and possible causes of AFM;
  • Attend weekly team meetings, and, when necessary provide information on current activities or to become familiar with current activities;
  • Contribute to abstracts and peer-review publications from above mentioned projects and studies.
  • Investigate the growth and characteristics of respiratory viruses;
  • Design, conduct and interpret biological experiments to support development programs and identifies biological pathways and agent;
  • Provide biological scientific support to technology and product development;
  • Review scientific and technical summaries, and provides recommendations for scientific manuscripts and presentations

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

No supervisory or management authority.

 

EDUCATON AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor degree required. Masters of Public Health, Epidemiology preferred. Experience contributing to professional publications preferred. 3-5 years working in a lab required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The candidate must have at a minimum:

  • Ability to develop formulation and production of rRT-PCR oligonucleotide kits and control material for RVDT panels for external distribution and perform quality control testing on reagents before release.
  • Ability to perform validation testing for clinical, analytical and limit of detection (LOD), and reproducibility studies for the qualification of new and alternative laboratory equipment or assays for submission of laboratory developed tests (LDTs) for CLIA approval. Generate data summaries to be included in 510k and CLIA submissions.
  • Ability to perform reagent validation on new chemistries and manufacturing processes for the CDC Respiratory Viruses rT-PCR panels.
  • Ability to draft protocols and work instructions for quality control testing for the manufacturing of respiratory viruses rRT-PCR reagents.
  • Ability to develop training and other supplemental informational materials to support proper assay performance including labeling and instructions for use.
  • Ability to draft protocols and summary reports for manufacturing of reagents by RVDT.
  • Ability to develop documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the manufacturing of reagents in accordance with Quality Assurance guidelines and best practices.
  • Ability to assist with production of the CDC MERS-COV Evaluation Panel for the quality assessment of domestic MERS testing.

Work will be performed in a climate controlled office environment.
