Microcomputer Systems Specialist I, St. Petersburg, FL (ID#15493)

SUMMARY

Cherokee Nation Technologies (CNT) supports federal clients in their leadership role in conducting a wide range of geologic, geophysical, morphologic, oceanographic, and climate investigations.

 

CNT requires assistance supporting information technology resources. The Microcomputer Systems Specialist (MSS) will manage desktop/laptop resources used to process scientific and administrative data. The MSS will install hardware and software on Windows-based and MacOS-based desktop computers, configure them for office applications, and upgrade and troubleshoot existing equipment. Applicants should be self-motivated with a background in computing systems; knowledge of their application to science research and science administration functions is desirable.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The work will consist of two primary activities: configure, deploy and maintain information technology at SPCMSC, and assist and train staff at SPCMSC in the use of deployed technology.

 

Functional Description / Desired Outcome

 

The contractor shall furnish all labor, unless otherwise stated herein, necessary to provide non-personal Information Technology Specialist services for SPCMSC.

 

Description of overall duties

 

The work will include two main activities 1 and 2 below, and have common technical, education and experience requirements.

  1. Incumbent supports the scientific and technical staff by managing desktop/laptop resources used to process scientific and administrative data. And in this capacity performs the following duties:

    • installs hardware and software on Windows-based and MacOS-based desktop computers; configures them for office applications

    • upgrades and troubleshoots equipment

    • evaluates new systems and makes recommendations for computer software and equipment improvements and requirements

    • obtains quotations and prepares documentation for procurements of Macintoshes, PCs and accessories

    • performs system administration tasks on Microsoft Windows or Red Hat Linux server platforms

    • maintains software licenses, equipment maintenance and warranty agreements

    • confers with technical and professional staff to discuss the latest available equipment & methods and efficient ways to use them

    • confers with all staff in the use of computer applications for their needs

    • potentially writes and documents new application programs as needed and instructs personnel in their use

  2. Supports training of user community, and in that capacity performs the following activities:

    • provide end-user training ad hoc

    • explain new technologies, focused on desktop tools for office automation, personal digital connectivity, and on digital multimedia

    • support learning environment through computer equipment and audio/visual setup

 

Schedule and Deliverables

 

Deliverables shall be provided to the technical representative and may include oral, written, or electronic documentation of computer installations, operable software installation and configuration, and procurement activities:

      • Hardware/software configuration accomplished within 2 weeks of assignment; documentation submitted via internal electronic helpdesk ticketing system

      • Detailed troubleshooting procedures developed within 4 weeks of assignment; documentation tracked via internal electronic helpdesk ticketing system and assembled into internal SOP library

      • Prepare procurement documentation within 3 weeks of assignment; submissions are incorporated into internal document library

      • Develop new web content to be incorporated into Center IT website to explain new and updated procedures and services

      • Prepare presentation materials describing new or updated IT techniques; deliverables include presenting to IT Group or Center staff at large

      • Report progress on a monthly basis

 

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

Will report to CNT Program Manager and may coordinate daily work with CNT Site Lead and interact with client representative (Task Order Manager).

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A degree in computer science, information science, geography, geographic information systems, physical or natural science or a related field.

 

Bachelor’s Degree: Highly preferred

 

Associate is Degree: acceptable with sufficient experience included to demonstrate the needed skills in the KSAs section below.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of computers, peripheral equipment, networking and data communications

  • Working knowledge of, and direct experience with current Microsoft Windows operating systems: Windows 10, including installation, configuration and tuning

  • Working knowledge of current Apple MacOS operating systems

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server operating systems

  • Ability to work with users and to provide assistance in computer functions and applications

 

Also valuable:

  • Familiarity with Linux operating system (preferably Red Hat Linux), including command line environment is also valuable

  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2016, including file services and directory services, is also valuable

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Office environment, travel for field activities and/or meetings may been needed.
