Mid-Level Website Analyst

The US Department of State Global Engagement Center is charged with leading the U.S. government’s efforts to counter propaganda and disinformation from international terrorist organizations and foreign countries.

The Analyst will be required to manage messaging websites and monitor and analyze the online environment in Arabic and to work with other GEC analysts to provide regular reports about violent extremist propaganda to leadership and partners.

Duties and responsibilities for the Mid-level Website Analyst

  • Complete other duties related to the Digital Outreach Team, as assigned.
  • Post products online once cleared by designated State Department officers.
  • Alert designated State Department officers to issues warranting attention and possible response.
  • Work with other GEC analysts to compile analysis of the information environment and violent extremist propaganda for distribution to GEC leadership and other partners.
  • Work as a member of a team to assist in the design of videos and banners for distribution on relevant online platforms.
  • Work with the Analytics Directorate to identify and track metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of their messaging products.
  • Review the messaging products developed by other members of the team to ensure they are grammatically correct and culturally appropriate.
  • Develop social media messages that are persuasive and relevant to at risk audiences in their region.
  • Monitor online social media platforms, discussion forums, blogs, and video sharing sites, to maintain situational awareness of the information environment.
  • Produce messaging products for placement websites to counter violent extremism, state sponsored propaganda, misinformation, and explain U.S. policies to foreign audiences.  
  • Create or update the look, layout, and features of GEC counter-messaging websites.
  • Conduct technical maintenance on GEC websites to ensure they are secure and protected from hacking or security breaches.
  • Develop and maintain counter-messaging websites to include building pages on the websites, posting products, and collecting analytical data.

Required Experience/Background

  • The Website Analyst must have a strong background in website design and management.
  • Candidates must have a strong understanding of both graphic design and computer programing.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Candidates will have experience in creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps
  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator or other visual design and wire-framing tools.
  • Ideal Website Analyst will also have a communication background in either journalism or marketing performed in the Middle Eastern world.  They should have personal and professional experience using social media and be fluent with the platforms that are most used in their region of expertise.
  • Candidates must have a high degree of knowledge about political events, especially in conflict areas, which drive or are utilized by extremist organizations in their respective region.
  • A strong capability in the Arabic language, particularly in writing, is required. 
  • Ideal candidates would be a native linguist, with a high proficiency level in English, and some experience living in the Middle Eastern world. 
  • Expertise in the Arabic language online environment, in-depth knowledge of Middle Eastern culture and history.
  • Familiarity with USG policy on designated issues and be able to draw upon publicly available, cleared U.S. Government information resources and the vast resources of quality information about the United States available online.
  • Expertise with current extremist messaging narratives and techniques affecting their region
  • Security Clearance Required
  • Candidates must have a MRPT upon appointment
