SUMMARY

Support USAMRIID within the pathology division to conduct research utilizing molecular pathology techniques

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as a principal investigator focused on applying state-of-the-art molecular pathology and other relevant pathological techniques to elucidate novel functional related pathology research of infectious agents
  • Develop innovative research proposals to seek funding for research geared at understanding the molecular basis for infectious diseases
  • Lead and drive publications on high profile manuscripts to help establish scientific leadership for the Pathology Division
  • Oversee members of the research team in protocols, designing experiments, troubleshooting technical issues, interpreting data, and writing manuscripts. Supervise in the drafting and writing of manuscripts, research proposals and technical reports
  • Work independently to develop cutting edge molecular biology and other relevant pathological techniques as applied to systems level pathology analysis and provide expertise in techniques, such as immunofluorescence (IF), in situ hybridization (ISH), and other related techniques
  • Develop and manage a GLP complaint Molecular Pathology laboratory
  • Develop techniques associated with immunohistochemistry and related standard operations procedures (SOPs)
  • Manage the staining of IHC slides, including those for Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Well-Documented (WD) studies, as needed
  • Provide expertise in super-resolution imaging, confocal imaging, Laser Capture Dissection Microscopy, and other state-of-the-art techniques and employ crosscutting knowledge and expertise in biology (microbiology, biochemistry, virology, bio-informatics, synthetic biology, systems biology, etc.) to develop multidisciplinary research programs for integrated problem solving
  • Examine, using standard light and confocal microscopy, interpret, and record changes in histological specimens stained by in-situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence slides
  • Work with pathologists, technicians, and researchers on experimental planning, data analysis, modifying protocols to address scientific or technical obstacles, and troubleshooting problems that may arise in the course of research
  • Prepare written reports for researchers and pathologists as required for research protocols within established timelines and in accordance with existing Pathology Division and USAMRIID policies and procedures
  • Train other members of the research team in research techniques.
  • Provide daily oversight of military, civilian, and contractor technicians working in the Molecular Pathology laboratory within the Pathology Division to ensure work is being performed properly, timely, and efficiently
  • Present research findings in scientific forums such as conferences, oral speaking engagements, and in meeting with collaborators; publish experimental data when appropriate
  • Provide Technical POC with regular (i.e., weekly) research progress updates or upon request using Microsoft Office based applications
  • Complete required job-related training, including GLP training, as necessary in accordance with Pathology Division policies and procedures
  • Recommend attending 1-2 scientific conferences annually in order to obtain continuing education and to ensure cutting edge knowledge and techniques are maintained

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

No supervisory/management authority or describe supervision

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • PhD in Biological Sciences
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an academic and or industry setting in a relevant biological discipline
  • In Depth knowledge of molecular biology assays
  • Extensive experience with Confocal Microscopy, Laser Capture Microdissection Microscopy, Super-resolution Microscopy and other state of the art techniques in relation to infectious disease research
  • Record of innovative contributions to high consequence infectious diseases as evidenced by a strong publication record, including first/senior authored publications in top tier journals
  • Proven track record in scientific grant writing for developing innovative research proposals to seek funding for research geared at understanding the molecular basis for infectious diseases

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is primarily performed in laboratory space
