Network Engineer III, Silver Spring, MD, US ID#16153

Provide network engineering in support of the N-Wave program for the consolidation and optimization of NOAA wide networking to include the integration of the legacy NOAA network operation center (NOC) within the N-Wave program. All legacy NOAA NOC tasking will be replaced by N-Wave specific tasking following goals outlined in the NOAA Strategic Plan for Network Optimization and Transport. The Incumbent will function as a member of the N-Wave Integrated Team to assist the N-Wave program manager with ensuring legacy services remain operational while transitioning transport functions to N-Wave, migrating operations, monitoring and management to the N-Wave NOC and the formulation of the new N-Wave Enterprise Network services portfolio for NOAA wide support.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Function as a member of the N-Wave Integrated Team to fulfill the following essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Answer tier 2 and 3 tickets for Campus networks consisting of Juniper and Cisco devices.
  • Help design and build campus networks per policy and standard best practices
  • Provide T3 level support for Aruba Wireless System
  • Travel as needed to do installs and other work at customer sites
  • Provide good written and oral communication to customers and peers
  • Work within timelines and manage priorities to ensure on time completion of tasks
  • Have at least a CCNA level knowledge of network fundamentals
  • Perform physical installs as needed of campus LANs and Wireless networks
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned



Supervisory/Management Authority

  • This position does not have management authority or supervisory capacity


Education and Experience

  • Experience configuring and running Cisco firewalls
  • Experience with Aruba Wireless network is a plus
  • 5+ years of experience in network architecture and engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is desirable


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Cisco/Juniper Routing and Switching technologies
  • Strong knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking protocols/technologies
  • Ability to communicate designs and network concepts to a variety of audiences, including peers and customers, verbally and in writing
  • General understanding of project management processes and terminology
  • Ability to multitask and set priorities
  • CCNP, JNCIP or higher certification
  • Understanding of Unix based operating systems

  • This position is primarily in a secured federal office setting, a controlled office environment
