Nurse Practioner

San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), the largest military hospital in our Nation, is designed to care for up to 425 inpatients. SAMMC provides safe, quality, evidence-based care for our military and civilian patients. As the sole verified Level I Trauma Center within the Department of Defense (DoD), SAMMC simultaneously provides emergency services during 80,000 Emergency Department visits annually and serves as the premier medical readiness training platform for both the Army and the Air Force.

We are looking for four (4) Licensed Nurse Practitioners to support the SAMMC Virtual Med Center Support Services.  There are various shifts available.  Two (2 ) standard day shift  one (1) early shift  04300—1330 and one (1) late shift of 1300 – 2200.
The nurse practitioners providing services under this contract shall perform procedures within the scope of clinical practice privileges as granted by the MTF. The duties encompass nursing functions for which he/she bears responsibility and medically delegated functions of an Advance Practice Nurse. The Nurse Practitioner shall perform the same clinical duties as those required of any military or government civil service HCP of similar experience and in similar duty assignments. The quality of NP practice shall meet or exceed reasonable standards of professional practice for the health care concerned as determined by the same authority that governs military medical professionals in the same discipline. The individual will independently perform duties in accordance with professional standards and guidelines.


  • Perform and complete evaluations for patients in all age groups, newborns through geriatrics. 
  • Patient evaluation consists of the consideration of information from multiple sources that may include the patient's medical records, interview, physical examination, and findings from medical tests and evaluations. As part of the evaluation process, the NP will be required to consult with other health care professionals to obtain information or services that are relevant to evaluation process and to patient education.
  • Take patient’s medical/surgical history and performs complete physical examination or examination pertinent to the patient’s chief complaint and records findings. The facility’s electronic medical information systems will be used to obtain and to document pertinent patient information.
  • Initiates education and documentation required for patient/parent/guardian consent for procedures.  Witnesses the consent if the patient has been counseled by a provider.
  • Choose and ensure appropriate routine and special laboratory tests, radiographic studies, electrocardiograms, cardiac studies, and pulmonary studies are ordered as indicated by the patient’s medication history, assessment, or published standards as a component of the evaluation, as indicated for various purposes, including but not limited to: 1) discovery or identification of a disease or disorder which may affect care, 2) verification or assessment of an already known disease, disorder, medical or alternative therapy which may affect care.
  • Prescribe medications in CHCS as appropriate and in accordance with privileges and hospital rules and regulations.
  • During the orientation and training period, the NP will ensure that all evaluations are countersigned by a staff provider. The training period duration will depend upon the individual needs of the NP and will be determined by the Service Chief or their representative. Countersignature on evaluations will not be required once proficiency has been obtained.
  • Maintain documentation of all electronic and paper patient records in accordance with hospital directives and prepare all records and reports required. Ensure all documentation is legible. Use electronic medical record systems for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures, ordering of medications, writing provider’s order, and performing other required patient record functions at the discretion of the MTF. Indicate responsibility for the contents and correctness of all prepared reports/forms by affixing his/her own signature to the documents and validating their contents.
  • Consult with providers, Surgeons, and ancillary services (e.g. Cardiology, Internal Medicine) as directed by policy or as indicated by each patient assessment. The provider shall be required to interface with network participants, including other government contractors in order to appropriately manage services for the beneficiaries. Contract with other government contractors will be for the sole purpose of coordinating patient care.
  • Administrative Duties. Shall perform significant administrative duties including, but not limited to, maintaining data collection of daily and monthly clinical workload through an automated system.
  • Attend and participate in MTF professional staff meetings/conferences and other appropriate professional activities as requested by the Department Chief and held during scheduled work hours.
  • Contract provider shall perform services under the control and general supervision of the Department Chief, or his/her designated representative.
  • Performs, leads, and participates with departmental quality and process improvement activities as assigned by the Department Chief.
  • Maintain access/ passwords and proficiency in all computer systems that hold patient care information.
  • Serve as a resource person and assist with the training of other personnel.
  • Prepare service reports and collect data as required by MTF. Time to accomplish this will be scheduled during regular working hours.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and practices associated with the facility and OSHA.
  • Attends Continuing Medical Education (CME)/Continuing Education (CE) to maintain the requirements of the NP’s licensure and certification.
  • This is a virtual telemedicine position in which VTC will be used to interact with patients. After appropriate training the provider will be asked to provide military specific examinations such as PHA, PDHRA, and fit for duty.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Be a graduate of a recognized Advanced Practice Nursing educational program and possess evidence of certification according to the requirements of the Board Certified /Advanced Practice certifying organization.
  • Have and maintain a valid, unencumbered license as a registered nurse in at least one state within the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. If the state of registration has a separate Advanced Practice (APN) licensure, the nurse practitioner shall also have APN licensure.  Current unrestricted license to practice in a state or a territory of the United States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia.
  • Possess and maintain current certification in basic cardiac life support (BCLS).  BCLS certification must be obtained through an American Heart Association and/or Red Cross approved training program. The Nurse Practitioner shall be responsible for obtaining and maintaining the necessary re-certification.
  • Possess at least two years recent full-time experience in a healthcare setting conducting in-depth patient history taking, assessment, and physical examination for all age groups, newborn through geriatric.
  • Continuing Education. Ensure that annual continuing education of all employees is sufficient to maintain certifications required by their certifying organizations and local credentials requirements. The contract NP shall be required to meet Continuing Medical Education (CME)/Continuing Education (CE) requirements. The government will not reimburse for these costs.
  • All contract HCPs shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other HCPs.
