ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Responsible for running the Virtual Embassy Tehran website and USAdarFarsi social media platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram, and iPhone and Android apps)
  • Develop original content for these platforms and provide review and analysis of the Iranian online space in order to better inform our outreach and provide voice over as well as written translations in English and Farsi as required.
  • Place relevant and attributed USG policy and related material onto the State Department’s Virtual Embassy Tehran (VET) website, as well as our various USAdarFarsi social media properties, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Telegram, and more.
  • The Specialist uses these policy-related materials to develop, for use on the above platforms, content including but not limited to overall USG policy on Iran, U.S. sanctions against Iran; Iran’s nuclear proliferation activities; Iran’s human rights record; and shared values between the American and Iranian people.
  • The Specialist uses his/her knowledge of social media platforms to explore ways to expand the VET and USAdarFarsi’s fan base and outreach.
  • The Specialist seeks out opportunities to amplify and highlight content from other relevant social media outlets, online discussion forums, and blogs/video-logs.
  • The Specialist monitors the Farsi-language online environment and reports to relevant offices on the major news stories, discussion topics and social media sites.
  • The Specialist assists with translations of policy statements, talking points, print interviews, and other media into Farsi, and otherwise assists in support of our Press and Public Diplomacy efforts as they apply to Iran. The Specialist is managed by the Public Diplomacy Officer in NEA/IR with guidance from NEA/PPD and PA. Develop and maintain familiarity with USG policy on designated issues and be able to draw upon publicly available, cleared USG information resources and the vast resources of quality information about the United States available online
  • Develop, for use on the above platforms, content including but not limited to U.S. sanctions against Iran; Iran’s nuclear proliferation activities; Iran’s abysmal human rights record; and shared values between the American and Iranian people.
  • Uses his/her knowledge of social media platforms to explore ways to expand the VET and USAdarFarsi’s fan base and outreach.
  • Take part in weekly editorial board meetings with NEA/IR staff to plan, develop, and finalize online content including tweets, articles of policy importance, webchats and interviews, videos, and Facebook polls and entries. The “POETS” will, in essence, “manage” our online engagement to Iranians drawing from the widest possible array of U.S. content.
  • Monitor online discussion forums, blogs/video-logs and other electronic media, and ensure that U.S. opinions and policies are accurately represented.
  • Alert designated State Department officers to issues warranting attention and possible response. Recommend potential responses or engagement that will maximize U.S. national security interests.
  • Draft proposed responses and other messages in Persian and translate these responses into English for review by senior NEA/IR staff. Post and monitor these responses on as many platforms as required once cleared.
  • On behalf of the NEA bureau, manage and direct the production and electronic dissemination of multimedia materials from other bureaus, including IIP, ECA, DRL, OES, PRM, and others.
  • Regularly report to NEA/IR statistics on use of Virtual Embassy Tehran social media sites, main topics of discussion on Persian/Iranian websites, and top sites used by Persians on the web.
  • Make accurate translations of talking points, policy statements, print interviews, and otherwise assist in support of our spokespersons.

 

EDUCATON AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • The Persian Online Engagement Specialist will be a degree holder from an accredited university.
  • Four to five years’ experience in a field related to communications, media, or working in online engagement is highly preferable.
  • Expert knowledge of online media and social networking platforms is required, and experience with multimedia production (video, audiovisual, graphics) is required. This position requires near-native Persian language capability, particularly in writing, which would allow the Specialist to understand and communicate in the current online environment.
  • Experience working with high-level USG officials and cultural personalities is desirable, particularly in amplifying meetings and events for media consumption. Skilled in promoting brands to target markets via media is highly important. Previous work monitoring and reporting on foreign media is desirable.
  • Candidates must be fluent in Persian and English. Experience living in the region is highly preferred.
  • Must have experience in social media on a wide range of platforms, producing and editing video, and/or experience doing translation between English and Farsi.
  • Must have proven experience working in a team environment, and be able to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing in both English and Farsi/Persian.
  • Must have expertise in the Persian-language online environment and in-depth knowledge of Persian culture and history.
