We are seeking a Quality Control Scientist II to join a QC laboratory team supporting programs within the Influenza Division of the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The team supports the production and distribution of FDA-cleared and Research Use Only in-vitro diagnostic products developed by the CDC that detect and characterize various influenza virus. The selected candidate will perform QC testing of components of diagnostic test products in various stages of the production process. All testing and reporting is conducted under Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and results are compared to product specifications. The selected candidate will gain valuable experience on multiple molecular platforms.

The selected candidate will work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus located in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The contractor shall conduct activities to receive, track, and analyze seasonal influenza viruses for the WHO bi-annual and FDA annual influenza vaccine strain selections.  The contractor shall also develop and characterize Candidate Vaccine Viruses (CVV)s to support vaccine development by the Influenza Division. The contractor shall submit monthly progress and annual summary reports of activities to the COR/CO. This information will also be used to identify and characterize influenza strains for global influenza risk assessment and situational awareness, and for the development of new and improved diagnostic reagents and influenza vaccines. These activities include:

  • Support the development of Influenza Candidate Vaccine Viruses (CVV)s using innovative laboratory methods.
  • Isolate seasonal influenza viruses using cell cultures, including Qualified MDCK cell line or embryonated eggs for vaccine development project.
  • Analysis and improvement of antigen yield/immunogenicity of CVVs, including virus titration by TCID50, plaque assay or similar and antigenic testing.
  • Propagation of influenza specimens as well as candidate vaccine viruses (CVV) in compliance of GLP regulations.
  • Performs virus isolation, propagation and titration.
  • Improvement and optimization of influenza reverse genetics for candidate vaccine viruses (CVV).
  • Cell and viral isolate specimen and inventory management.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Supervisory/Management Authority

  • This position will not have supervisory authority.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree with at least four (4) years of laboratory experience in biology, virology or microbiology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of virologic research and evaluation to analyze, evaluate and provide expert advice and consultation.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, applications, and state-of-the-art technology in the position's scientific area of responsibility to provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues.
  • Ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpretation of results to coordinate the evaluation of programs and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program or project areas, provide guidance and advise program administrators and members of the community, respond to inquiries, and interact with high level officials and representatives from public and private public health organizations.

Work Environment

  • Work will be performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
