Seeking a Quality Control Scientist to join a QC laboratory team supporting programs within the Influenza Division of the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.   The team supports the production and distribution of FDA-cleared and Research Use Only in-vitro diagnostic products developed by the CDC that detect and characterize various influenza virus.  The selected candidate will perform QC testing of components of diagnostic test products in various stages of the production process.  All testing and reporting is conducted under Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and results are compared to product specifications.  The selected candidate will gain valuable experience on multiple molecular platforms.

The selected candidate will work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus located in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing in-vitro molecular QC testing of diagnostic product raw materials, production intermediates and bulk samples, finished products, packaged samples and components.
  • Performing mathematical calculations, recording results and observations.
  • Maintaining all related records, buffers and reagents, and maintaining work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Assisting in the development, editing, and validation of Standard Operating Procedures that support manufacture and quality control processes associated with production of in-vitro diagnostic products.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, ordering laboratory reagents, and receiving and inspecting supplies and samples.
  • Communicating progress orally and in writing with program managers and other researchers.

Supervisory/Management Authority

  • No supervisory/management authority.

Education and/or Experience

  • B.S. in microbiology, molecular biology, or related life science and 1+ years of laboratory experience (post-graduate).
  • Bench experience, 1 to 2 years, in real-time RT-PCR including assay set up and instrument set up
  • Direct experience in standard software programs (MS Word, Excel etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Direct bench experience working in a laboratory under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) or GMP.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of public health research and evaluation to analyze, evaluate and provide expert advice and consultation.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, applications, and state-of-the-art technology in the position's scientific area of responsibility to provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues.
  • Ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpretation of results to coordinate the evaluation of programs and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program or project areas, provide guidance and advise program administrators and members of the community, respond to inquiries, and interact with high level officials and representatives from public and private public health organizations.
