The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to Department of Defense and US Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the Warfighter.

We are seeking a Research Clinical Molecular Microbiologist to work at the WRAIR in Silver Spring, MD.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary investigator with scientific and technical skills to develop relevant phenotypic and genotypic assays for the clinical management of MDRO surveillance and infections.
  • Serve as a primary investigator for the development and optimization of assays to determine bacterial loads and genes and alleles using real?time PCR and “Next Generation” sequencing.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in the genetic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, particularly relating to ESKAPE-E (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella species, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter species, and Escherichia coli) pathogens.
  • In consultation with the Director and Deputy Director, develop research protocols and grant proposals as well as the conduct of research on other projects related to MDRO surveillance and infections.
  • In consultation with the Director and Deputy Director, actively seek external and internal collaborations to expand the impact of the MRSN.  
  • In consultation with the Director and Deputy Director, prepares proposals and progress reports for performance of research projects.
  • Maintain the MRSN molecular laboratory, including instrument maintenance and reagent/supply inventory.
  • Where appropriate, serve as liaison between the MRSN and military infectious disease physicians to identify clinically relevant research areas.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the MRSN at scientific and government conferences and seminars.
  • Maintains knowledge of state-of-the art principles and techniques.
  • Trains and supervises technical staff to accomplish objectives.
  • Writes and publishes articles in peer reviewed scientific journals; prepares data for presentation at scientific meetings.
  • Integrates and coordinates scientific experiments in the field of expertise.
  • Participates with the Director and Deputy Director in planning sessions for program design and direction.
  • Performs other projects and duties as needed.
  • Provide all job-related progress reports/technical reports as requested.
  • Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations.  Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
  • Performs light duties and other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree with at least four (4) years postdoctoral experience as investigator in bacterial antibiotic resistance. Experience with real-time PCR, multiplex real-time PCR and “Next Generation” sequencing platforms is essential.
  • Productive research experience in both antibiotic resistance genetics and global gene expression in pathogenic bacteria is an absolute requirement for this position. 
  • The demonstrated ability to write and publish in English peer review journals is absolutely required.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  knowledge of applicable highly complex scientific procedures and techniques relating to position.
  • Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
  • An intimate knowledge of software for the manipulation and investigation of DNA and RNA is an absolute requirement for this position.
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.  Lifting up to 50 pounds.  Occasional stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling climbing, overhead lifting
