The position shall provide laboratory support as related to the combat casualty care mission and requirements of resuscitation, blood, and hemostasis research to ensure the reliability of the laboratory’s analysis and deliver timely and accurate analysis of the research specimens. Maintain all required materials and supplies in the laboratory to ensure uninterrupted service, operates and maintains all equipment IAW the manufacturers' directions and IAW DA medical maintenance policies. Additionally, they will practice general laboratory safety, infection control, and aseptic techniques for the safe handling of sharps, blood and/or blood products, to include cleaning work areas and equipment and participate in all required training.


Research Laboratory Technician

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Receive and process research specimens for analysis, to include chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, and immunohistochemistry examination, IAW established laboratory policies.

· Perform laboratory procedures and analysis on research specimens from human and animal patients and research subjects, to include chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, and immunohistochemistry examination, IAW established laboratory policies.

· Provide technical assistance to the investigators and technicians.

· Prepare solutions, drugs, microbiological media, and reagents for specimen analysis.

· Assist in coordinate in planning the day-to-day workflow to ensure coverage and to prevent delays in specimen analysis.

· Perform quality control procedures, as required for specimen analysis and validate all quality control results prior to specimen analysis.

· Report suspected quality control drifts to the proper laboratory personnel for further examination.

· Review all analysis results reports for completeness, acceptability, and accuracy, prior to submission to the next level review.

· Collect, record, and maintain all data IAW laboratory policies

· Provide specimen totals and analyte count totals to the laboratory personnel as directed.

· Assists with inventorying and maintaining the stocks of laboratory supplies and reagents, IAW established USAISR and laboratory policies.

· Ensure placement of order requests for all necessary supplies and reagents, in a timely manner to avoid delays in specimen analysis, IAW USAISR and laboratory policies.

· Operate and maintain all equipment IAW the manufacturers’ directions and IAW DA medical maintenance policies.

· Perform operator maintenance on all equipment, IAW the manufacturers’ directions and IAW DA medical maintenance policies.

· Generate work orders, IAW USAISR policies, for equipment or facilities, as needed.

· Properly ensure the physical security of all equipment and assists with equipment inventories for medical maintenance.

· Immediate notification to the proper laboratory official or USAISR official of any observed safety concerns.

· Assist in maintenance of a safe and clean working environment and work area.

· Participate in all required training.


Supervisory/Management Authority

  • This position will not have supervisory authority.


Education and/or Experience

· Associate's Degree or higher level education in in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.

· Current American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) Licensure, Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).

· Current Licensure issued by the state in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient with regards to organizing, recording and summarizing data.
  • Ability and skills in addressing and preparing monthly Quality Control Charts
  • Skill and knowledge on how to report any problems that may cause work interruption or create potential quality impacts.
  • Knowledge and skill to independently solve minor equipment and sample problems.
  • Must have the ability to work in a team and independent environment
  • Excellent communication skill (oral and written)


Work Environment

  • The position is on a federal secure campus, 7:30 am to 4:30pm in an Office and Laboratory environment.
