SUMMARY

Cherokee Nation Technologies (CNT) supports federal clients in their leadership role in conducting a wide range of geologic, geophysical, morphologic, oceanographic, and climate investigations.

 

CNT requires assistance supporting federal efforts involving Data Lifecycle to plan, acquire, process, analyze, preserve, curate, publish/share, document, manage quality, and secure/archive data.  This work will support the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of the Interior (DOI), and USGS policies and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CNT is searching for a Researcher/Data Management Specialist to join its team and participate in promoting an understanding of data management plan requirements, creation and implementation.  The selected CNT staff will also conduct data entry, data quality assurance and control, and data integration of various types of scientific datasets.

 

Duties include the following:

  • Consults with content owners and subject matter experts to understand the general characteristics of datasets.
  • Assists authors with workflow for metadata creation and validation.
  • Assists CNT and client staff with developing metadata templates specific to the data types utilized by various research groups.
  • Supports data stewardship and preservation activities by assisting CNT and client scientists and data stewards within research projects by following proper fundamental science practices and procedures for the client’s data management workflow; thus supporting data/publication archival and dissemination activities.
  • Discovers, identifies, and catalogs data and information on internal servers to facilitate data access, integration, and interpretation by CNT and client staff
  • Provides maintenance and curation of data archives.
  • Supports protocols and procedures necessary for data management release of data and metadata, preserving and providing public access to scientific data.
  • Verifies geospatial content and web services located on local databases/servers to ensure they include appropriate metadata and meet requirements or standards.
  • Assists in implementing records management. 
  • Provides back-up support for metadata reviewers. May be tasked with reviewing metadata prior to publication, ensuring records are FGDC-compliant and meet all client/federal requirements.

  • Deliverables shall be provided to the CNT Program Manager and client technical representative and may include oral, written, or electronic documentation of data sets.

     

    SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

    N/A  

    Will report to CNT Program Manager and may coordinate daily work with CNT Site Lead and interact with client representative (Task Order Manager).

     

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, geography, geographic information systems, physical or natural science or a related field.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of research methods in various disciplines such as biology, geology, oceanography, geography, or library science in order to effectively apply and implement data management guidance to science and management staff.

    Understanding of methods utilized to provide various types and formats of scientific data, including spatial data and publications, for public accessibility and scientific reuse.

    Working knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop software and geodatabases.

    Experience with managing data and data quality assurance; ability to identify discrepancies within data.

    Technical troubleshooting, creative problem solving, and resourcefulness a must. Ability to learn new things quickly and work in a team environment.

    Ability to communicate (orally and in writing) scientific and technical information to audiences of differing expertise levels as it relates to data management.

    Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize assignments effectively, attention to detail and excellent time management skills.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Office environment, travel for field activities and/or meetings may been needed.
