Cherokee Nation Technologies (CNT) supports federal efforts to research Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS).  The NAS Program provides a central repository for spatially referenced biogeographic accounts of introduced aquatic species throughout the United States. The program provides online/real-time queries, spatial data sets, species information, and scientific reports. The data is made available for use by biologists, interagency groups, and the general public.

We are seeking a Researcher IV to assist CNT in performing critical data entry in order to enter a back-log of aquatic plant data, to keep up with the continuing inflow of information, and for technical writing of species fact sheets.

A qualifying individual skilled in aquatic plant and animal identification and ecology, who is familiar with scientific literature on invasive aquatic species, and can write scientific documents will make a strong and necessary addition to the NAS Program. Familiarity with relational databases is also highly desired.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Enter nonindigenous aquatic species sightings data into an on-line database, following established Standard Operations Procedures (SOP)
  • Provide quality control for data entry by verifying entries prior to submission. Enter nonindigenous aquatic species sightings data into an on-line database, following established SOP
  • Deliver quality control for data entry by verifying entries prior to submission
  • Geo-reference data to latitude/longitude and hydrologic unit codes.
  • Perform literature reviews for species distribution information
  • Contact state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other agencies for aquatic species data
  • Find and enter museum data and data from other on-line sources
  • Write technical accounts of species introductions and biology
  • Contact other scientists and biologists to acquire new information on nonindigenous aquatic species
  • Perform quality checks on new and existing data in the NAS system
  • Complete standard office work such as scanning and organizing documents
  • Attend staff meetings related to nonindigenous aquatic species and data management
  • Assist with other Center research as appropriate.

 

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in the study of biology or a closely related field is required
  • One (1) to three (3) years of research experience in an environmental science atmosphere is a plus and highly desired
  • Ability to work independently and within established guidelines and operational procedures
  • Familiar with standard research practices and statistical databases for research data collection and management
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills; both oral and written
  • Ability to travel within a reasonable notice as needed to support project research
  • Have a clean driving record and active driver’s license
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug screen and federal background check
