Job Description:

The Scientific Writer I position produces written content for expert and general audiences. This role is pertinent in interpreting complex information and ensuring that communications are clear, accurate and compliant with policy. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Carry out Internet research or interview experts to obtain the information needed to write content.
  • Produce a wide range of published content which includes user guides for courses and websites, websites, standing operating procedures, etc.
  • Write reports on the progress of product development or research projects
  • Provide content for brochures, feature articles, training programs and websites
  • Assists scientists to prepare papers or presentations for conferences or scientific journals
  • Present work in a variety of formats – PowerPoints, white papers, articles, etc.
  • Understand the requirements of online publishing to produce content for websites

Supervisory/Management Authority:

This position does not have management authority or supervisory capacity.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or communications
  • Years of experience may substitute for education requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Must be able to present work in a variety of formats
  • Must understand requirements of online publishing to produce content for websites
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to pass a background check and a drug screen

Work Environment:

Moderate sound (e.g., business office with office machines and computers, people traffic), some outdoor weather conditions and all routine job tasks inherent in position; the ability to stand and walk one-third to two-third of the time; the ability to talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; close vision; color vision; and ability to correct and adjust focus. Risk of electric shock and exposure to extreme cold (non-weather).
