CNSP is seeking a Speech Writer to assist the DEA in their mission.  This is an outstanding opportunity to work for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the Pentagon City area. The speechwriter will be responsible for writing and editing full-text speeches, editorials, and presentations with visuals for the Administrator and other DEA principals for a variety of audiences and via a variety of dissemination methods (these written products are intended for delivery or publication under the byline of the Administrator, Deputy Administrator, or the Attorney General)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work high-visibility, high-priority projects with full authority to make editorial decisions necessary to comply with the particular purpose and intended use of the written product
  • Will ensure that products meet bibliographic citation, legal and regulatory requirements, and consistent use of appropriate terms and acronyms
  • Will ensure the final written product meets Agency requirements, verifying the accuracy of material; terms, abbreviations, and acronyms; and material (such as direct quotations) reproduced from other sources
  • Shall rewrite where necessary to supplement, delete, or combine text, selecting, compiling, and verify references needed to expand information, ensuring a consistent writing style, especially when others contribute to the material
  • The speechwriter shall supplement abstract ideas with concrete examples, rewrite to substitute concrete terms, or designate abstract passages for illustration
  • Proofread written products for completeness, accuracy of facts, and continuity
  • Ensure contents conform to the rules of grammar and format and style requirements; manage the preparation of assigned writing/editing projects, to include consultation with the author and subject matter experts; establishment of milestones; preparation of the preliminary, coordinating, and final drafts.
  • Provide verification of coordination, reviews, and approvals; inclusion of all necessary elements and statements; preparation of all legal aspects such as copy right clearances and reviews of the final electronic file
  • Shall maintain a file of all approved editorial changes and other relevant information for each project

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in writing, journalism or a closely field is required
  • Have mastery of communication principles, methods, practices, and techniques; analytical methods; and interpersonal relations practices
  • Skilled in applying such mastery in developing and applying new approaches to the most difficult and complex public affairs problems of an agency by developing or evaluation information programs enhancing understanding among publics opposed or indifferent to agency programs
  • Knowledge and skill to analyze public reaction to agency programs and policies in developing recommendations that significantly modify an agency's major programs or policies; and integrating diverse points of view in a communication plan in establishing and maintaining mutual understanding with various agency publics
  • Must be articulate, have communication skills to consult with other divisions within the agency and, when requested, higher headquarters on various writing projects
  • Must be an english expert and know grammar, syntax, punctuation, word usage and all the other requirements for journalistic writing to ensure that copy is acceptable for publication.

  • Working proficiency with common guidelines and tools for editing include the dictionary, thesaurus, a handbook of English, an annual almanac, the Government Printing Office Style Guide, the Associated Press Style Manual, the Modern Language Association or Chicago Manual of Style, Modern American Usage, and a variety of reference tools, such as a Rhyming Dictionary, a book of familiar quotations, and other sources to improve the final product
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite and word processing
  • An ACTIVE TOP SECRET clearance is mandatory
  • The ability to pass a federal background check is required
