Project Overview:

 

The National Severe Storms Lab is a Federal agency focusing on world-class weather research related to the initialization and development of severe weather. Ace Info Solutions currently provides IT-related services that are an integral part to the success of NSSL’s mission. An overview of services includes DNS/DHCP administration, multi-platform (Linux, Windows, and Apple) server and desktop support, Active Directory administration, hardware technical support, and data center management.

 

Position Description:

 

An experienced, hands-on administrator with expertise in Red Hat, CentOS, and Mac OS operating systems, preferably with experience in VMWare and SAN/NAS storage. Will be expected to work within a team to directly support end-users by troubleshooting and maintaining servers and workstations based on Unix platforms. Must be able to troubleshoot issues related to RAID configurations, graphic systems based on nVidia chipsets, network configuration, and OS deployment. Other responsibilities include maintaining web system performance by performing system monitoring, analysis, and performance tuning and troubleshooting system hardware, software, and operating system management. This position requires the ability to solve issues independently and work with other administrators to guarantee transfer of knowledge of work through both written and oral communication. BS/BA degree (or equivalent), plus 4 years in related field.

 

Responsibilities:

 

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR II

  • Maintains data files and control procedures for a simple system of networked personal computers or for a group of desktop computers linked to a host server.
  • Ensure Linux, ESXi, and Mac OS systems are kept up-to-date by installing new software releases, system upgrades, evaluate and install patches to meet all government security requirements.
  • Have comprehensive knowledge and skills to independently resolve Linux and Apple issues as required to mitigate and minimize outages.
  • Provide technical guidance for system requirements on procurement requests.
  • Possess the ability to troubleshoot server and workstation hardware across several manufacturers and platforms (including, but no limited to Supermicro, Dell, HP, NetAPP).
  • Assist the IT group on tracking all assets through a central inventory system.
  • Participation in web server administration team
  • Work alongside other Linux and Storage administrators to respond to end-user trouble requests through enterprise ticketing system.
  • Participation in VMWare administration team
  • Perform configuration, optimization and tuning of Linux systems, ESXi systems, and NetAPP brand storage devices and software.
  • Support and troubleshoot virtual hosts within a VMWare environment
  • Monitor and troubleshoot Linux-based RAID configurations, and assist with data-recovery efforts.
  • Help maintain datacenter environmental monitoring system by tracking temperature and electricity usage, and report quarterly datacenter usage report to Senior IT.

Qualifications/Certifications:

  • BS/BA degree (or equivalent) in Information Systems
  • 4 years of experience in related field
  • Diagnostic and troubleshooting ability for Linux workstation and server builds
  • Extensive knowledge of multiple network protocols including SSH, FTP, NFS, SFTP, TFTP
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work under tight deadlines
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions provided in various forms (written, oral or diagram)
  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal, comprehension
  • Experience using Network Appliance FAS Series Systems
  • Strong experience with storage infrastructure design, storage architecture, administration and optimization (SAN, NAS, Fiber channel, iSCSI, etc.)
  • Familiar with TCP/IP, switches, firewalls, routers, and configuration, administration and optimization.
  • Solid experience using VMWare vSphere, and ESX virtual computing methods
  • Working knowledge of NetBackup, data backup technologies, systems principles, and safeguards
  • Working knowledge of container technologies such as Docker.

Additional Information:

  • Web server administration experience preferred but not required
  • VMWare administration strongly preferred but not required
  • SAN Storage administration preferred but not required
  • Linux administration experience required
