The National Geospatial Program provides leadership for USGS geospatial coordination, production and service activities. The Program engages partners to develop standards and produce consistent and accurate data through its Geospatial Liaison Network. Operational support is provided by the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC). These and other Program activities that are essential to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) are managed as a unified portfolio that benefits geospatial information users throughout the Nation. The NGTOC provides essential support for the USGS and the Nation in the acquisition and management of trusted geospatial data, products, and services, through world-class geospatial technical expertise and customer service. The NGTOC supports The National Map (TNM) among other related efforts.

We are looking for a qualified individual to provide system administration support for NGTOC.


  • Install, configure, test, integrate, and maintain new and replacement servers, storage devices, other hardware components, and software.
  • Provide system administration expertise for multiple web mapping servers, services, and associated applications to ensure maximum availability and optimal performance.
  • Provide system support for development of applications and data associated with Web services.
  • Assist with the migration of hosts, applications, and services to approved cloud environments (currently AWS).
  • Develop and implement an approved GIS system architect plan for current and future growth.
  • Develop scripts and processes to automate GIS installations, maintenance, as well as cleanup of automated tests.
  • Ensure web browser based applications include technical analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, documentation, and user assistance for Web mapping applications and content.
  • Provide support toward the creation of web mapping services, geodatabases and data loads, and applications such as HTML viewers for a wide range of activities and programs.
  • Manage GIS relational database accounts and access to ArcSDE.
  • Implements industry best practices to perform system administration, resource management, and performance tuning and analysis on designated computer systems to ensure optimal performance and maximum availability.
  • Monitor designed systems and services with regard to availability, usage, performance, and security to ensure optimal stability and performance.
  • Examine system usage and error logs and glean pertinent information as needed based on performance, stability of systems, and A&A supporting documentation. Provide analytics on uptime, usage, and performance monthly.
  • Execute monthly IT security patch updates within the USGS defined timeframes, unless otherwise approved by NGTOC Security Manager.


  • Demonstrated experience with current software applications in use: Apache Web Server, Apache Tomcat, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), ArcGIS Desktop (with extensions), ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Image Server, ArcSDE, MS SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Java, HTML, XML, Web-browser technology and compatibility, Geodatabases, GIS services (Web mapping, metadata, and geoprocessing services), Global Mapper, LP360, LasTools, modified Commercial Off-the Shelf (COTS) software for USGS requirements, Script writing, OGC standards and specifications.
  • Experience with Documenting  and presenting Standard Operating Procedures, Project Plans, and System Architect diagrams to Government staff for review and approval.
  • Experience with Work-order tickets  submitted in approved ticketing applications (ServiceDesk ManageEngine Plus and Remedy).
  • Stay abreast of current system/software technology and best practices and research new technologies to assure that USGS requirements are satisfied.
