The National Geospatial Program provides leadership for USGS geospatial coordination, production and service activities. The Program engages partners to develop standards and produce consistent and accurate data through its Geospatial Liaison Network. Operational support is provided by the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC). These and other Program ctivities that are essential to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) are managed as a unified portfolio that benefits geospatial information users throughout the Nation. The NGTOC provides essential support for the USGS and the Nation in the acquisition and management of trusted geospatial data, products, and services, through world-class geospatial technical expertise and customer service. The NGTOC supports The National Map (TNM) among other related efforts.

We are looking for a qualified individual to provide system administration support for NGTOC.


  • Provide system administration expertise for data storage devices and data distribution services, as well as associated applications to ensure maximum availability and optimal performance.
  • Manage existing and develops new data storage devices, distribution services, and techniques in support of programs and activities.
  • Install, configure, test, integrate, and maintain new and replacement storage devices, services, and other hardware components, and software.
  • Examine system usage and error logs and glean pertinent information as needed based on performance, stability of systems, and A&A supporting documentation.
  • Provide analytics on uptime, usage, and performance monthly.
    Monitor usage, understand applications, and proactively respond to ensure maximum availability and optimal performance.
  • Execute capacity planning activities. Results are presented to Government representatives to be used for fiscal year planning.
  • Participate in life cycle planning for data and hardware.
  • Configure and manage shares, volumes, quotas, snapshots for NFS, CIFS, and mixed (NFS/CIFS) environments.
  • Document and present Standard Operating Procedures, Project Plans, and System Architect designs to Government staff for review and approval.
  • Work-order tickets are submitted in approved ticketing applications (ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus and Remedy).
  • Changes in configuration will be approved by the IT Change Advisory Board (CAB) and documented in current ticketing application (ManageEngine Service Desk Plus).
  • Stay abreast of current system/software technology and best practices and research new technologies to assure that USGS requirements are satisfied.
  • Execute monthly IT security patch updates within the USGS defined timeframes, unless otherwise approved by NGTOC Security Manager.
  • Participate in IT security re-certification and re-accreditation of the system.
  • Following the NGTOC approved Business Impact Analysis timelines, develop and implement a contingency plan for system, software, and service recovery following a catastrophic system failure


  • Demonstrated experience to monitor and update work-order tracking databases (Remedy and ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus).
  • Demonstrated experience with current devices and applications supported include Sun Sparc hardware using Sun Solaris, Pure Storage, Network Appliance FAS series hardware using OnTap OS, Sun Fibre Channel Storage Area Network, iSCSI SAN, Legato Networker, StorageTek LTO, ITT ENVI and Image Access Solutions (IAS), Spectralogic t200 tape library, quantum tape library, CAM and storage management software, data storage and distribution technologies (e.g.,Sun storage and archive file system SAMfs and SAMfs HSM), DFS, storage area network (fiber channel and iSCSI).
