The National Geospatial Program provides leadership for USGS geospatial coordination, production and service activities. The Program engages partners to develop standards and produce consistent and accurate data through its Geospatial Liaison Network. Operational support is provided by the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC). These and other Program activities that are essential to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) are managed as a unified portfolio that benefits geospatial information users throughout the Nation. The NGTOC provides essential support for the USGS and the Nation in the acquisition and management of trusted geospatial data, products, and services, through world-class geospatial technical expertise and customer service. The NGTOC supports The National Map (TNM) among other related efforts.

We are looking for a qualified individual to provide system administration support for NGTOC.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform system administration, resource management, and performance tuning and analysis on designated computer systems to ensure optimal performance, maximum availability, and secure posture.
  • Install, configure, test, integrate, and maintain new and replacement servers, storage devices, other hardware components, and software.
  • Install, configure, test, integrate, and maintain High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and applications.
  • Assist with the migration of hosts and applications to approved cloud environments (currently AWS).
  • Develop methods to automate server processes; for example, scripts to automate application updates or monitoring services.
  • Obtain USGS COUA credentials.
  • Update appropriate local-level Microsoft Active Directory system administration elements like user account updates, container assignments, and some Group Policies.
  • Changes in configuration will be approved by the IT Change Advisory Board (CAB) and documented in approved ticketing applications (ManageEngine Service Desk Plus).
  • Document and present Standard Operating Procedures, Project Plans, and System Architect diagrams to Government staff for review and approval.
  • Work-order tickets are submitted in approved ticketing applications (ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus and Remedy).
  • Implements industry best practices to ensure operating system and all software including patches and upgrades are installed and tested thoroughly and in a timely manner.
  • Manage Active Directory system/user accounts, software licensing and archival/backups. Monitor designed systems and services with regard to availability, usage, performance, and security to ensure optimal stability and performance
  • Examine system usage and error logs and glean pertinent information as needed based on performance, stability of systems, and A&A supporting documentation. Provide analytics on uptime, usage, and performance monthly.
  • Stay abreast of current system/software technology and best practices and research new technologies to assure that USGS requirements are satisfied.
  • Execute monthly IT security patch updates within the USGS defined timeframes, unless otherwise approved by NGTOC Security Manager.
  • Participate in IT security re-certification and re-accreditation of the system.
  • Following the NGTOC approved Business Impact Analysis timelines, develop and implement a contingency plan for system, software, and service recovery following a catastrophic system failure.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience using current operating systems and applications supported include x86-based servers, Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2012/2016, Microsoft Windows version 7 and above, Microsoft Active Directory, Active Directory Group Policy, VM Ware, HPC Systems, Lustre Parallel File System, DFS, Red Hat virtualization, MS Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, Symantec anti-virus software, GIS software packages including ESRI Arc GIS, Global Mapper, LP360, LasTools, Leica (ERDAS), and BigFix or SCCM forapplication and OS updating.
  • Demonstrated experience with additional operating systems and applications supported are Sun/Oracle-based servers, Linux, Solaris, local virtual environments, cloud (CHS) environment, Network protocols (e.g., NFS, CIFS, etc.), Internet protocols (e.g., FTP, HTTP, Secure FTP, HTTPS, etc.), System security technologies (e.g., iptables, tcp wrappers, etc.), NIST security standards, shell scripting and modern programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Perl, and PHP).
