The National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) supports the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Water Mission Area by performing quality assurance on laboratory and field measurements and supplying reference materials to USGS water-quality programs and projects. The position is for a System Administrator for the Information Technology Program.  A successful candidate will be providing expertise in supporting Solaris servers and Windows servers, scripting languages such as Bourne Shell and C-Shell.   Knowledge of Visual Basic or VB and Perl would be beneficial. Knowledge of Active Directory (AD) would be beneficial.  The position required the successful candidate to work with NWQL project managers to evaluate current and historical information administrating Solaris and Windows server installation and scripting language with associated applications that would improve the overall operations’ efficiency and effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all installs meet current USGS security standards
  • Customizing the configuration while ensuring integration with requested third party and corporate software
  • Test and optimize system and network functionality.
  • Replace and install server hardware to include memory, hard drives, various interface cards and mother boards.
  • Document work with system and update current configuration plans
  • Document required backup and recovery procedures
  • Responsible for document activity, solutions, and alternatives taken for future reference.
  • Respond to computer output instructions and error conditions; choose or devises a course of action among several alternatives and alters or deviates from standard procedures if standard procedures do not provide a solution.

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will have/not have supervisory authority

 

Qualifications:

 

  • 3-5 years of directly related experience in network administration and support
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in Solaris servers and Windows servers,
  • Scripting languages such as Bourne Shell and C-Shell software applications.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
  • Must have skills in successfully troubleshoot and meet system security procedures including firewalls and tripwire intrusion detection.
  • Ability to diagnose and recover failed systems.
  • Must have the ability to independent work method on a variety of nonstandard computer problems which require extensive operator intervention
  • Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Skills in responding to computer output instructions and error conditions; chooses or devises a course of action among several alternatives and alters or deviates from standard procedures if standard procedures do not provide a solution.
  • Strictly adheres to all safety, health, and environment processes and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skill such as oral and written.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is on the Federal secured campus. Office work is sedentary and may involve long periods of working at a desk, and computer terminals.   The position is 7:30 am to 4:30pm. There is no travel involved.
