The United States Geological Survey (USGS) – Fort Collins Science Center Operations Services Team provides a wide range of information technology (IT) support services to the USGS Fort Collins Science Center (FORT). The Team delivers services to multiple projects within FORT, including modeling, geospatial processing, high throughput computing and multiple client tools. The team supports and maintains the Center’s infrastructure of file servers, storage devices, virtualized environments, WiFi and LAN networks and equipment, telecommunication systems, backup systems, desktops, laptops, tablet computers, peripheral equipment, including but not limited to external USB devices, printers, specialized lab equipment, AV equipment, and an array of software. 

Job Description:

The System Administrator III (SAIII) will work with minimum supervision to customize and maintain a multi-platform system configuration, ensuring efficiency and security.  Troubleshooting problems reported by users and/or by automated network monitoring systems. Coordinates installations, replacements and upgrades of servers and operating systems with technical support staff and department users. Designs, programs and/or installs tools to help manage systems and application environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Includes the following (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Configuration Management – Monthly Server Patching, Package and software installation using IBM Endpoint Manager and Microsoft SCCM. Research, test, or verify proper functioning of software patches and fixes. DNS and DHCP Management
  • Documentation – Develop, document and revise system design procedures, test procedures, and quality standards. Document design specifications, installation instructions, and other system-related information.
  • Server and Workstation hardware support – Install and configure new hardware to meet functional specifications. Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replace defective components. Maintain data security and integrity. Manage access permissions for on-site and remote end users. Monitor and manage VMWare ESXi infrastructure. Ensure functionality of on-site backup infrastructure. Monitor and manage on-site tape libraries, including the export and import of media to and from secure offsite locations. Monitor, analyze, and maintain iSCSI SAN storage units.
  • Operating Systems – Must be fluent in Microsoft Windows and have a working familiarity with Apple and Linux operating systems. Assist with preparation of purchase requisitions for computer hardware and software, networking, telecommunications, and test equipment, cabling, or tools. Implement controls to establish and maintain security for operating systems, software, and data.
  • Telephone Systems –Install and configure new hardware, including back-end VoIP configuration management. Develop, maintain, or implement telecommunications disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity. Supervise maintenance of telecommunications equipment.
  • Property Management – Coordinate with federal staff to maintain accurate records of equipment model, serial and property numbers.
  • Vulnerability Management – Respond accordingly to security and vulnerability concerns as they arise. Monitor system operation to detect potential problems. McAfee endpoint encryption. Symantec Antivirus deployments.

Supervisory/Management Authority:

This position does not have management authority or supervisory capacity.

Education and/or Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of similar or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, IT, or similar degree
  • Years of experience can substitute for education requirements Training, certification, degree, or related experience networking, protocols, and/or system administration
  • Experience managing clustered iSCSI storage devices.
  • VMWare ESX/ESXi management with emphasis on 5.0+
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and GPO management

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Desire to automate as much as possible accurately
  • Previous / existing experience working in both a Windows and a Linux Environment
  • Database administration / experience with relational database servers
  • Willingness to learn and understand Cloud computing
  • Relevant industry certifications

This position is primarily performed a controlled office environment.
