SUMMARY

The core mission of our client, the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), is to protect the warfighter from biological threats.  Additionally USAMRIID investigates disease outbreaks and threats to public health.  Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medical solutions, therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics and information that benefit both military personnel and civilians.  USAMRIID is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command. 

We are seeking a Technical Manager (Laboratory Technician V) for the Unified Culture Collection (UCC) laboratory.  This individual will provide technical laboratory support in the tasks of maintaining ISO Standard 17034 accredited microbial reference materials.  This includes, but is not limited to, strain accession, production, characterization, inventory management and distribution activities. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtain and maintain an active SECRET security clearance
  • Provide expert technical guidance
  • Conduct all UCC procedures in support of the UCC processes in an accredited environment
  • Review, modify or create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Maintenance of a microbial culture collection of over 1200 strains
  • Distribute cultures to external customers
  • Assist the UCC Deputy Laboratory Director/Principal Investigator with process improvement activities. 
  • Present work at scientific meetings approximately 2-3 times per year
  • Maintain a safe and secure accredited laboratory environment
  • Ability to identify and characterize cultures to support the reference material collection
  • Travel may be required in support of the mission or to present scientific research
  • Hold and maintain Biosurety Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) status
  • Safely work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

  • This position will have supervisory authority which may include:
    • Coordination, organization & prioritization of activities performed by the laboratory staff
    • Oversight of activities performed by the technical staff

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • MS degree is preferred
  • Previous benchtop lab experience
  • Experience with some of these technologies or techniques: Applied Biosystems 7500, Light Cycler real time PCR analysis, Vitek and Biolog phenotype microarray analysis,  MiSeq (or equivalent) next generation sequencing, 3500 Genetic Analyzer (or equivalent) sequencing
  • Familiarity with biocontainment procedures and Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) regulations
  • Proven experience meeting deadlines and standards
