The USAISR’s mission is to provide combat casualty care medical solutions and products for wounded warriors, from self-aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations; provide state-of-the-art trauma, burn, and critical care to Department of Defense beneficiaries and civilians; and provide Burn Flight Teams. The USAISR does this through three unique missions:

  • To provide requirements driven innovations in combat casualty care advance medical care for injured services members;
  • As the only Burn Center in the DoD provide state of the art burn, trauma and critical care to injured war fighters and DoD beneficiaries around the world;
  • Through the Joint Trauma System, provide a performance improvement system dedicated to ensuring that medical care is organized according to the needs of the patient


Within the vivarium at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), we provide support services for veterinary and animal care in support of all research task areas. Provide support for laboratory services for biomedical research sample analysis in areas of chemistry, coagulation, histology, microbiology; provide support for the full-spectrum of research animal care to include medical and surgical care; and daily husbandry requirements.


The Veterinary Technician positions is to provide support for veterinary and animal care in all aspect of the vivarium.  Demonstrating technical, operational, and administrative expertise in support of customer's organizational and departmental objectives.



  • Assists the primary investigators and institute staff with animal research protocols.
  • Performs nursing care and skills (e.g., invasive monitoring, life support equipment, data gathering devices, etc.) to laboratory animal research.
  • Responsible to assists with (or perform independently) invasive medical/surgical procedures.
  • Required to perform data collection as well as records observations.
  • Responsible for recognizes changes in patient condition indicative of complications and Identify the need for emergency measures and advanced life support
  • Duties include implements therapy to algorithm, reports changes as appropriate.
  • Support with and handles animal specimens and cadavers.
  • Responsible to perform post-operative recovery care for animals.
  • Conducts daily animal health checks for animals to include daily census, observing animals for indications of poor health or injury, and conditions of animal housing. Reports and takes steps to treat or correct any deficiencies noted.
  • Performs basic preoperative preparation of animals to include clipping and scrubbing of surgical sites. Monitors basic animal vital signs to include taking temperature, pulse, and respiration rate before surgery, during surgery, and during recovery from surgery.
  • Responsible for animal anesthesia induction, perioperative monitoring, and recovery
  • Cleaning the facilities and medical equipment.
  • Required to complete administrative duties as needed (e.g. medical records review, supply purchase requests, minor budget audits, etc.)


Required Qualifications:

  • Must have minimum of 2-year veterinary technology degree or an additional 2 years of specific pre and/or post operation veterinary experience
  • At least 1 year of related experience
  • Must have professional verbal and written communications skills within the scientific standard.
  • 2 or more years of performing pre and post-operation. 
  • Experience in working unsupervised or without assistance
  • Current ALAT Certification
  • Must be able to get the AALAS certification within 1 year of employment
  • Knowledge of animal care techniques and procedures (protocol methodology) is required and research experience desired.
  • Proficiency in basic clinical laboratory skills including ability to follow standardized orders, execute timed events and administration of research test articles.
  • Must have skills in performing basic laboratory procedures (e.g. fecal analysis, urinalysis, PCV, etc.)
  • Must be able to recognize changes in patient condition indicative of complications.
  • Ability to recognizes need for emergency measures and advanced life support
  • Ability to perform euthanasia and necropsy of laboratory animals.
  • Must be a United State Citizen


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Certification as a registered or certified veterinary technician or animal health technician (RVT/CVT/AHT) 
  • Current AALAS Certification
  • Preferred previous experience in military or government environment


Security Clearance Requirements:

  • Upon hiring, candidate will be subjected to a PUBLIC TRUST CLEARANCE LEVEL investigation which is required to be adjudicated and maintained, in order to remain eligible for employment, per contract and government requirements



The duties of this position performed in a restricted area, whose ambient temperature can be higher than normal and where a risk of exposure to infection and contagious disease exists.  All personal must wear and use adequate personnel protective equipment. All successful candidate will have to meet the USAISR Health requirements. New hire will comply with safety procedures and infection control/occupational health procedures pertaining to the entire ISR facility, but in particular to the laboratory, vivarium and animal surgery area. This may include documentation of the following: TB Test; Hepatitis B vaccine, titer, or wavier, Toxoplasmosis titer (females); Rabies (pre-bite) vaccine, titer, or wavier, Brucellosis titer; Q-Fever titer, Tetanus booster within the last 5; HIV titer, as required. Other special exam such as pulmonary function, respirator fit, audiogram and/or laser vision testing may also be required.
