SUMMARY

 

The National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) supports the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Water Mission Area by performing quality assurance on laboratory and field measurements and supplying reference materials to USGS water-quality programs and projects. Quality Assurance (QA) data from various projects are used to estimate bias and variability within the field, analytical and measurement processes. Statistical, graphical, and data reports summarizing the QA data are produced and distributed to internal and external USGS customers.

 

The position is for a Wed Application Programmer III working within the Information Technology Section supporting the USGS in various computer areas, e.g., installation and maintenance of hardware, software and applications, both internal and Enterprise. We are seeking an experienced programmer with expert knowledge of SQL, object oriented programming, and web development languages (e.g. ColdFusion 11, HTML and Jscript).   Successful candidate will be able to set up and work with a robust software test environment. Knowledge of JavaScript, C#, and XFD forms would be beneficial.   If you are an expertise in building a web based applications, have excellent organizational skills and demonstrated skill the with both user and technical documentation, then we want you!

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES;

 

  • Responsible for design, develop, and implement web environments and applications that interact with the following databases, Oracle 12c, SQL Server 2012, Access, PostgreSQL and MySQL.
  • Responsible to accept  guidance from other team members to write scripts and applications that reference databases used to interface with internal and external computer systems, web interfaces, and laboratory instrumentation. 
  • Will be required to make recommendations on the redesign and documentation of older web applications and investigation for the feasibility of the redesign within the context of the laboratory systems.
  • Duties include testing, development, modification and maintenance of complex web applications using

interrelationships of files and records that fit into the design of laboratory systems.

  • In response to requests from the development team members, makes modifications to existing applications and reports with little or no assistance from other members of the development team
  • Essential duties include providing planning, design, and documentation of web application programs as follows:
  • Use project planning expertise to evaluate design and implement web applications within the agreed upon time frame.
  • Works with team on ERD of the application, documentation of which code is used for each menu item, naming conventions used for objects and files, etc.
  • Work with IT staff to make sure they have the knowledge to fully maintain and make enhancements to the database and application once the Task Order is complete.

 

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will have no have supervisory authority.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor degree in computer science or related field
  • 5-7 years’ experience in  development of web applications
  • Experience in SQL, object oriented programming, and web development languages (e.g. ColdFusion 11, HTML and Jscript).
  • Preferred experience in working within the Federal government setting
  • Must be a US Citizen.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have technical knowledge to write scripts and applications that reference databases used to interface with internal and external computer systems, web interfaces, and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Be proficient at working independently and with other team members on a variety of routine and nonstandard web applications, database interfaces and applications, and custom reports for both internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of Customer Service Request (CSR) system preferred
  • Excellent communication skill such as oral and written.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

This position is on the Federal secured campus. Office and laboratory environment which requires long periods of sitting, working at a desk, and computer terminals.   The position is 7:30 am to 4:30pm. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
