The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) off ice of The Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) is a critical component within CDC, providing leadership in science, public health practice, and education. CSELS is transforming the U.S. public health system by modernizing public health tracking systems; providing timely information to clinicians and public health partners; training a competent and sustainable public health workforce; strengthening the nation’s clinical laboratory systems; and innovating to increase effectiveness and efficiency of CDC programs.

CSELS is seeking professional communications, web development, and partnership engagement services to support the Center’s efforts. We are seeking a Web Design Administrator to provide web development and electronic media oversight for CSELS and the four Divisions. Contractor will be responsible for developing and maintaining websites out of the Center Office of Director, while also providing technical expertise to the four Divisions. 



  • Create and update web pages in a customized WordPress WCMS utilizing the CDC templates based on designer mock-ups, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Create functional HTML prototypes based on design mock-ups. 
  • Translate mock-ups into clean code, adhering to coding, template standards and style guidelines.
  • Make use of HTML, XHTML, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery programming languages as needed to fix site issues.
  • Keep up-to-date on Section 508 accessibility requirements and ensure all web pages and web files are compliant.
  • Ensure new pages meet standards for device and browser compatibility.
  • Create and optimize 508 compliant images and PDFs for the web using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Acrobat).
  • Migrate existing web content from old to new templates and implement template upgrades.  Deploy new sites using current template, including configuration of associated files (navigation, heater, footer, etc.).
  • Advise on information architecture, user experience, search engine optimization, 508 compliance, and use of graphics, mobile optimization, and other web best practices.  This could be informed by review of website statistics (using Site Catalyst, Google Analytics, etc.) which would also determine site performance and use.
  • Review and respond to requests for technical assistance from Division web development staff; respond to requests within two business days.
  • Develop and implement strategies to efficiently conduct a quality assurance checks (including a link scan and 508 compliancy check) of Center websites every other month; provide report of necessary updates to website content owners and developers.
  • Proactively identify, research, and resolve problems or issues; participate in team strategy session to discuss solutions. Proactively recommend updated strategies to improve analysis tactics and outreach efforts.



  • M.S. Computer Science or related field 3+ years industry experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages: HTML, CCS, JavaScript or related language.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Acrobat).
