CNC Machinist, Fort Eustis, Virginia, US, ID#17035

Cherokee Nation Red Wing (CNRW) is a military service company supporting war fighters with innovative, quality solutions for even the most challenging situations. With a focus on aviation weapon systems life-cycle support, the company maintains a presence at key commodity commands to provide critical sustainment/reset and repair services. Wholly owned by the Cherokee Nation, CNRW is part of the Cherokee Nation Businesses family of companies.

Performs work as a CNC Machinist to rapidly fabricate highly complex and non-routine experimental and prototype components for fielded and developmental aircraft.  Interacts with a test team consisting of engineers, technicians, and other fabrication specialists engaged in research and development of flight test programs to identify requirements and resolve problems with supplied information or designs.  Produces aeronautical research equipment and airframe components that are used in the exploratory and advanced research and development of Army aviation systems; primarily for rotary wing aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Includes the following:

  • Interprets project requirements working from complex blueprints, drawings, mechanical sketches, or verbal instructions.
  • Programs and operates 3-axis and 4-axis CNC lathe, and  3-axis and 4-axis CNC milling machines to produce research and development hardware made of various materials to include aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Esprit CAD/CAM solid model programming to develop and edit  G-code/ M-Code computer numeric programs for three-dimensional contouring that requires  3-axis, 4-axis or 5-axis of machine tool motion for computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines using supplied CAD dxf files or solid models.
  • Use JobBoss software to electronically record hours worked and inputs data into JobBoss database.
  • Operate 5-axis CNC wire Electric Discharge Machine (EDM)
  • Operate 3-axis CNC C02 Laser Machine
  • Operate 5-axis milling machines.
  • Use Pro-Engineering /CREO Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to retrieve solid models used in the programming process.
  • Analyze and measure solid models to determine product requirements.
  • Design and manufacture fixtures needed for complex machining operations.

Works under the general direction of the Mechanical Fabrication Office Lead.  Receives assignments in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches and oral, written or electronic instructions through the use of a traveler system, and electronic work priority list using JobBoss software.  Makes independent judgments and decisions in processing work assignments and works independently without more than normal supervision.  Required to support overtime requirements in excess of 40 hours per week to include weekends as required.

Exhaustive knowledge of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining techniques to set up and operate various types of CNC machines to include 3-axis and 4-axis CNC lathes and milling machines.

  • Applies advanced mathematics and strong knowledge of computers, software applications, operating systems, engineering principles practices and concepts to program, set up and operate various CNC machines for machining operations of complex flight components.
  • Uses various measuring instruments for machining operations, and works to difficult close tolerances (+- .001) on complex flight components manufactured from a variety of metals and materials.
  • Determines the order of individual machining operations to be performed to ensure efficient work flow.
  • Uses knowledge of machining techniques for various metals to choose and correctly apply tooling for individual machining operations, and calculates proper speeds and feeds of tooling to minimize machining process time.
  • Attends training as necessary to keep abreast of state of the art technology, machining processes, programming software and tooling developments.
  • Uses barcode work order travelers generated by JobBoss software to electronically record hours worked and inputs data into JobBoss database.
  • Makes independent judgments and decisions in processing work assignments and works independently without more than normal supervision.
  • Required to support overtime requirements in excess of 40 hours per week to include weekends as required
  • Knowledge of mathematics and experience in computer usage to include various underlying operating systems (such as Windows XP, Vista, Window 7, Windows 10.)
  • Exhaustive knowledge of G-code/ M-code numerical computer programs for various CNC machining operations.
  • Knowledge of materials and their characteristics, such as various metal, plastics and composites in order to assure efficient fabrication or modification of an adequate and quality product.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, mechanical sketches and drawings to understand the functions of the assigned product on systems being fabricated and associated tolerances required for final product.
  • Skill in using various measuring instruments during the manufacturing process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The work is performed both inside and outside, primarily inside a building (machine shop) which is normally adequately heated, lighted and ventilated.  The shop is noisy from various machine operations, and sometimes dirty when in process of machining and discarding excess materials.  Is subject to hazards such as cuts, scrapes from using hand tools and power machinery, and lifting heavy pieces of material or equipment.  Involves occasional exposure to unpleasantness from wearing safety equipment such as respirators, gloves, glasses, and other protective devices depending on the work situation.
The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding. Considerable arm movement and working in awkward positions occurs when setting up machinery, assembling items, and installing assemblies.  Frequently handles objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasionally handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
