SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Microbiologist I to support the CDC Division of Viral Diseases, Picornavirus Laboratory.

SUMMARY

The Microbiologist I will support the Division of Viral Diseases in compliance with CDC, federal safety regulations and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Select Agent Regulations and will prepare reports, charts and graphs and present data at internal laboratory meetings.

The Microbiologist I will develop antibody detection protocols for a variety of non-polio Enteroviruses and other Picornaviruses; development of these assays will include but are not limited to: a) Virus stock preparation b) Virus titration c) Virus neutralization assays d) Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays e) Development quality control standard measurements.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

  • Conduct studies to assess immunity to enteroviruses.
  • Develop methods to assess immunity to enteroviruses.
  • Performs microbiology and related fields support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous microorganisms and biological agents.
  • Carrying out a variety of laboratory procedures and processes as it relates to microorganisms and their reactions to the environment.
  • Ensures that the full range of routine methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable qualify controls are correctly conducted. Ensures proper collection of data and conducts experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments.
  • Ensures that incoming specimens are processed and triaged maintaining “chain-of-custody.”
  • Applies knowledge of the technical rules and procedures to document and prepare analyses and reports of findings for tests and studies.
  • Calibrates and operates laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies.

 

SUPERVISOR/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

No supervisory/management authority.

 

EDUCATON AND EXPERIENCE

Master's or Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years’ experience in microbiology, biology or a related discipline.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Professional knowledge of microbiology and related biological science fields sufficient for independently performing recurring, precedential projects using standard methods and techniques.
  • Professional knowledge and skill to perform and monitor the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures for which there are standard methods and techniques, to calculate and correlate test results, and to verify results
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency policies.
  • Skills necessary to operate automated pieces of equipment and use the laboratory information system.
  • Skilled in written communications sufficient to prepare routine reports, papers, journal articles, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work will be performed in a climate controlled laboratory environment.
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation.

The environment may require prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, and light lifting up to 20 lbs.
