Cherokee Nation Technologies (CNT) supports USGS in its leadership role  in conducting ecological research regarding Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) related science throughout the 5 States of the Center.  HAB studies include streams (ex. Buffalo River Basin in Arkansas), lakes and reservoirs (current needs in Arkansas and Tennessee), and coastal systems (ex. Mississippi Sound).  Candidates must possess skill sets that include field data collection of all types of biological and water quality samples and other analytical skills including GIS and scripting (R and/or Python), and management of large data sets.

 

CNT is looking for a Researcher to support our team in its mission conduct biological and water quality data collection, compilation, and computation activities. Work efforts affect the accuracy, reliability, or acceptability of the data. Results of these activities will be used by project personnel for specific purposes.    Below are the requirements:

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, calibrate, and use sounds to measure in situ water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, and temperature
  • Assist project personnel to measure streamflow
  • Support project personnel to prepare for all biological and water quality field work
  • Assist project personnel to unload field vehicles and prepare samples for shipment to labs
  • Collect water quality and biological samples and measures streamflow under the direction of project personnel.
  • Data compilation and Processing such as: enter all field data into appropriate USGS databases
  • Assist project personnel throughout all 5 states to help prepare and publish data releases for moderate to complex studies
  • Support project personnel to prepare figures and tables for reports and helps with complex analyses as appropriate education and/or experience allows
  • Provide monthly summaries describing and quantifying work accomplishments

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position will not have management authority or supervisory capacity

Education and/or Experience:

  • A minimum Bachelor of Science degree in the ecological or biological field sciences is required
  • A minimum of one (1) to three (3) work experience outside of educational background relevant to this position preferably in an environmental research setting (such as consultant, lab technician, etc.) is strongly desired

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skills with field data measurement of basic water quality parameters and basic water quality and biological data/sample collection are needed
  • Ability to analyze numbers, figures and budgets
  • Working knowledge with automated systems as well as basic statistical software, graphing and tabling software, and database entry and manipulation
  • Basic business practices in order to assist in logging data, sorting and reviewing statements and other common office business practices
  • Ability to travel to research sites as needed and work outside in the regional elements
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 30 lbs. of lab equipment
  • Knowledge of basic interpretation of water quality and biological data
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills; both oral and written
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and federal background check

Work Environment:

  • This position is primarily performed in a federal office environment / outside performing research/ requires long periods of standing etc.
